"How do they do that ?"

I really don't know Henry, words fail me.

Looking at the pictures, all he had to do was pull the bucket in and lower the boom, or even drive the JCB further forward on the trailer deck.

Having done it once and got away with it he didn't learn much, did he?

It was very fortunate that only the bridges were damaged. A similar incident a few years ago, on the A606 at Tollerton just outside Nottingham, cost several lives when the boom of the JCB swung on impact and took the side out of a Barton's bus.

Drivers like that are an embarrassment to an honest trade. Assuming that the first bridge had a height marker, he'd have a rough idea of the overall height of his load from the initial point of impact; although the usual procedure with unfamiliar plant is to check it with a colleague and a tape measure, both available on any building site.

What gets me is that he didn't take the hint and move the load. True one would have to consider axle loads if the digger was moved forwards, but there is no reason why the bucket and arm could not rest against the digger, thus lowering the arm height considerably.

Reminds me of a few years back in N. Cornwall which resulted in the decapitation of the occupant/s of a car.

It's for loads like this that height sticks are made.

Telescopic with a rubber sleeved arm that swings out and locks in place at a right angle to touch the highest part of the load as you check, the upright has a spirit level gauge.

The trouble with things like this is that we all get tarred with the same brush in the public perception.

Pay and choice of staff often but not always go hand in hand.

That'll be interesting, i wonder if the insurance will cover all or any seeing as it was pure negligence that caused the damage.

Ironically the driver will probably get away with it, he only needs to claim that he wasn't trained to measure heights, and unless the company have a written and signed training program.....

>>Police later grilled the embarrassed driver but no action was taken.

Why not? Dangerous driving? Driving without due care & attention? Surely something.

Exactly, I'd love to know the explanation for that decision too.

I agree with you.
