Mirror repair kits - Chris S
The glass in one of my wing door mirrors is cracked.

My local motor factors sells 'mirror repair kits' for a fraction of the cost of a mirror glass. These consist of a self-adhesive reflective panel that you cut to fit the mirror's shape.

Does anybody know if these will get through an MOT?

(sorry, pet hate of mine for them to be referred to as wing mirrors, unless it's an old car of course?)

I used one of these from Halfords and had no problems with the MOT. It was a few years ago, though.

Edits to say that I also know of a friend using one quite recently with no MOT problems.

Perhaps, but how well can you see in them? I use my door mirrors (mirrors on wing went out in the 70's) a lot and would not want a less than good mirror.

When I got one broken by a passing van, the Halfords generic replacement was not that much cheaper than the real thing bought from a dealer. Perhaps prices vary for the real thing?

If I had to replace one on my current car I would go for 'the real thing', but the one I bought from Halfords, which was for a previous car, was exactly the same as the one it replaced.

You can buy made to almost fit universal stick on ones. Its a proper glass mirror, sticks on the old cracked glass, can be adjusted as per the normal ones, heated by the original (not as well I admit) and is an MOT pass.

Nicole is a recidivist door mirror breaker, I have experience.

I looked at the stick on versions and then went to my Ford dealer for a Focus MK I replacement.
The spares dept got the replacement and said " Would you like us to fit it ? that will be an extra Three pounds"
Before I had got the plastic back out of the skimmer the the second guy walked back in "Job done !"
IIRC the morror cost £20- 25 ish.
The Hayes manual had a very long complicated proceedure but the Ford boys did a good job.
The heated function was of course fully restored.
I was happy to pay the money.

You give in too easily, aren't they fairing mirrors? (or even fairy, or is that yours with your tutu?). ;>)

I have been led to believe by my biking friends that if you have 600cc or more and the right attitude you don't really need mirrors...

Depends - you need to keep your eyes for the fuzz sneaking up on you.

Fast fuzz then?
 Mirror repair kits - R.P.
Fast fuzz - that can creep up on one, especially when one is doing gentlemanly speeds along dual carriageways....mirrors are rubbish on the RT.

Don't really need to brake on the RT - closing the throttle tends to polish off plenty of speed really probably due to it being a big twin...:-)

Break! as in stick to all signed speed limits....
 Mirror repair kits - R.P.
Clue is in the phrase "signed speed limits" e.g. Only three stretches of the A55 have signed speed limits, 30 around Penmaenhead (enforced by speed camera van), Colwyn Bay by-pass 50mph and well enforced by traffic blokes and then immediately after the by-pass a bizarrely signed 70 limit which has a reassuring de-restriction sign a couple of miles up the road.

The 70 mph sing is apparently necessary because that stretch of the A55 was built as a "special" road - the same legislation as applies to motorways. Therefore the road is signed as a motorway with the normal motorway signage as far as speed limits are concerned. When the normal road resumes an NSL sign is required.

You're right, it has motorway type regs as far as L plated drivers and the suchlike are concerned.

Halfords sell perfect replacements that stick over the old ones including anti-blindsport and anti-dazzle, but I suspect with their markup, they are more than a new glass, but I see that ebay sellers sell them cheaper (circa £6-11 for proper glass.).
