The London Surrey Cycle Classic, an apparent pre-cursor to the Olympics. There will be chaos as the roads will be closed with no access permitted to cross them.
It will catch out many, many people....inc Heathrow/ Gatwick traffic if not planned properly.

Yup, signs went up along the affected routes two weeks ago. I shall be a 5 minute walk away from part of it. you should be ok if you stick to trunk roads and motorways to airports.

Walking distance from my home.
New signs now appearing re diversions / no access.
|
The upside is they are removing speed humps and traffic calming measures along the route!
|
The map of the route.

There are going to be lots of folk upset on the day as many outside the area will not be aware of the eventand get stuck in the diversions.

Amazing all the fuss - perhaps they should take some lessons from the Giro, Tour and Vuelta

I have just got it out of the garage, serviced it and cleaned it up. Mostly tho because they have closed a B road near me that provides access to the village centre for FOURTEEN WEEKS!

And here are some photies.
The SKY team are using a jag as support vehicle! And Humph will like the Alfa support vehicle loaded up with bikes, (not hanging on the back - who wants a bike rack like that!)
As someone said, great atmosphere. The real one will be super.

Agreed, but such a thing would be more than adequate for a born-again not very good at it, ill-equipped, cake break motivated and let's face it, rather elderly, er, amateur...
Especially as a hitherto unused one could be secured at a more than fair price if the vendor were to be asked nicely enough but, you know, whatever...
:-)

Just come back from Walton on Thames. The roads opened at 15:00pm. The racers passed by there at 0930. Why the delay in opening the streets?
|
Prob'ly waiting for an old geezer on a wreck with no brakes to finish.

Of course, how do you expect the ole fella to get his bike back if he has no bike rack?
|
I saw the race at Hampton Court on its way out.
Crowd was up to six deep.
I also saw the race on the way back just after Esher and there was a good crowd there.
The whole event took over 30 mins to pass with of course lots of people wandering in the road prior to the end.
The barriers were all stacked and roads reopened quite soon after in the Esher area,
Many of the workers had been at their tasks for most of the night.
Apparently quite a few new road cones and also signs had been stolen and needed replacing.
Lesson is not to put cones out until just before the event.
I was amazed at the number of motorists who could not read " Road Ahead Closed" including local mincab drivers :-(
I wonder what the traffic will be like when the european fans in their camper vans invade and park up days before ?
The atmosphere was good and the police bikes from all over the country where having fun waving to all to get them cheering.

not surprised that 'local ' minicab drivers could not read - but haven't most now been replaced by educated foreigners in your area?

Presumably there was only one passage through Walton - the route seemed to contain several loops and double backs.
Otherwise, and here I'm on guesswork and suppostion, need to retain access for support and emergency vehicles plus possibility of a partial re-start in the event of a crash or whatever?

I think its because that many diversion barriers have to be unbolted and collected, and some street furniture needed to be replaced. It is a pain tho, I know one village that was completely cut off to vehicles for 8 hours.

>>I hate to think what the effect was in London
Just in Surrey :-
Hampton Court, Kingston bridges and I guess Walton were out of action.
At least the A316/ M3, the M25 and the A3 were left alone in the Surrey area.
From what I can see on the map going south west from Westminster the only routes across from E to W are the A3 and the M25 and that is an awful long way from London town.

I do hope they learn from Sundays event and give far better publicity to the closures to all in the country.
