Changing a wheel at the roadside - scary! - Jacks
My son had a front tyre blow out around midnight on his way home (shift work) on a B road, the road had several bends but fortunately he managed to pull in off the road where there was a gated entrance to a field.
Too late and dark to recover the car last night so I dropped him at work today and went off to change the wheel.
The car was just off the road but on a fast right hand bend, with a fairly steep uphill gradient . The tyre was completely shredded (O/S/F) with the rim touching the ground.
I managed to position my car behind, off the road on the verge with the hazards on and I placed my warning triangle at the side of the road just before the bend so drivers would know there was a hazard ahead.
I was really surprised how few drivers bothered to slow down or or even alter their line to give me a wider berth as I changed the wheel.
And a special mention to the twonk who was going so fast and wide he drove straight over my warning triangle smashing the thing to pieces - fortunately I was just about finished and just putting the tools away when this happened.

end of rant

I know you were being nice and cooperative and doing things by the book Jacks, but in situations like that i have absolutely no reservation putting my car in the way of traffic such that it can be passed but not without slowing down and maneuvering - 2 wheels only just on the verge in that situation i'd think.

So long as i wasn't creating a situation where traffic coming the other way could get a fright as they rounded the bend, i'd look very sheepish and wave and apologise for every honk of the horn of course.

Why couldn't your son change his own wheel?

...Why couldn't your son change his own wheel?...

Because he wanted to live to see his next birthday?

If you are a member of a breakdown service I would have rang them to change the tyre.

Saver for you.

Don't worry about it, your English is way better than my (non existent) Dutch.

I passed a 44-tonne lorry today on its side in the middle of
a blind corner, protected by a little plastic warning triangle. I almost missed the triangle when gazing at the enormity of the overturned truck...

Oddly enough I found myself thinking about this last Sunday during an extended bike trip. I saw at least a couple of cars having their wheels changed at random locations along the route (quite a rare sight these days) riding on the A41 near Witchurch I was reminded of an incident in the 80s where a car full of us were "making progress" around some beautifully marked and surfaced bends on that road when we came across a car with a punctured wheel right on the apex of one of the bends and a lone female, we stopped and bailed out to lend some muscle...bet that doesn't happen much these days...

Looks enormous, doesn't it Mike?

I can tell you that it looks even more enormous when you're standing at the side of it wondering how you managed to get it in that position too.

Might have been safer at midnight with lots of lights on than in the daylight rush hour?

A fair number of cars now don't have a spare so with a shredded tyre you'd have to call for recovery.

I removed the wheels from wifey's Honda Jazz recently to rotate them and they were stuck fast to the hubs - common with alloy's, I gather. At home with a trolley jack and a large rubber mallet and piece of wood I got them off, but I really wouldn't want to do that on the car jack at the roadside.

Certainly is Martin, but it's never been a secret.
