 Odd insurance exclusion/condition - R.P.
My wife passed her motorsickle test a couple of weeks ago - the first task was to insure "our" 650cc Kawasaki onto her old 125cc policy. Carol Nash did a good job of re-organizing everything - basically I have a multi-bike policy so I had the Kwaker on my policy and I was a named rider on her 125 policy so insurance happiness prevailed. The 125cc policy was converted to cover the Kwaker and the 125 went temporairily on my BMW policy which meant a 6.75 rebate. Anyway her Kwaker is now covered for both of us to ride but there is a sternly worded no commuting exclusion on it......which means she can't undertake the 12 mile trip to work on it, despite having secure parking at the site she works at.....most odd...any comments at to why this exclusion is included....?

Lots of cars on the road, rush hour, some drivers blind to bikes. Accident waiting to happen?

The definition of 'commuting' is travelling to and from a place of work on a regular basis.

So Mrs RP could use the bike to get to work occasionally.

My car is SDP use only, (no commuting) which suits me as I am retired. Easy, buy the insurance you need.

Same for me with Zurich.

This is North Wales not the M6!

Lots of sheep on the road, slow hour, some sheep blind to bikes. Mutton stew and new sheepskin slippers waiting to happen?

Watch any biker zipping through the gaps in the lines of cars, as the car drivers try to swop lanes to gain an extra car length during any London rush hour and the answer is clear.

She works in Holyhead, a meandering A road or a quiet Dual Carriageway - one size fits all I guess.

Here's an odd thing. When I was self-employed I needed "business" insurance cover as I was using my car for work not just commuting to and from. It always worked out quite a bit cheaper than social domestic, pleasure and commuting cover which I found strange given that my mileage was huge and I was honest about that. After I became employed again and was given a company car, I kept my "old" car for a while as well and when it needed to be re-insured I stated my new circumstances and my insurance costs went up. Very puzzling.

Curious. Then why doesn't everybody who commutes to work get business cover?
You only need to be taking a bit of work home with you and it technically counts as business use. Or say that sometimes, without notice, you may need to go to another company location during your working day.

You need to specify exactly what you need when buying any insurance. Never assume anything, there are many exclusions and you need to know exactly what is and isn't covered. Many companies no longer provide third party cover for any car on a comprehensive policy, (mine does).

Most employees don't in fact ever take work home with them or visit other premises during their working day and commuting cover is fine for them. Most large companies have contingency cover under their fleet policy to cover employees for very occasional business use by their employees if they are called upon to drive to another branch etc.

I do, and teachers do, for a start. If I thought I could get cheaper insurance by keeping a few office files in the car, then I'd opt for business use.

I worked for a company that was trying to get rid of premises. We worked at home or on customer premises. In fact if you were not working on customer premises, your job went to India.

I don't need to. My policy states social and domestic, which includes travel to and from your normal place of work.

Work!

Hmmm Remind me what that concept is again?

A four letter word Zeddo.

When I used to (four letter word) business use cover was a no cost add on.

Same for me - I feel my insurance has now reached the point where it's as cheap as it's ever likely to get for the X1.....but SAGA wanted 40 quid less but I didn't pluck up the courage to phone them to ask about winter tyres and wheel mods.....maybe I'm too old for the latter and should be tucked up with a bovril and daytime telly when it's cold outside.

It gets more bizzare...! Just checked the old documentation (renewal on 1.6.11) for the 125 that has now been superseded by the 650....she was covered to ride that to work, same policy number, same company, different bike. Even crazier that would have covered her to travel to "place of study" implying a college or whatever. Very odd.
