One of these rising bollards controls the congestion charge in the centre of Durham City:

I believe it's controlled by what the engineers call a loop, and it can certainly cope with trailers because I've seen it do so.

Having said that, lots of people have hit the damn thing, partly because they are still a rare sight on our roads.

They are made by a company called atg, what they don't know about bollards is not worth knowing:

I know some of the people who run/service the Durham City scheme quite well.

They have a number favourite bollard crash videos on their mobiles.

There's one from Manchester of a VW Golf which drives straight into one at about 30/40mph.

Gawping at these things is in dubious taste, but I'm told there's no record of anyone being seriously injured.

I've seen a few of the collisions in Durham.

It's rare for the airbags to be triggered, although the front of the car can be quite a mess.

There's often a pool of oil/coolant from a cracked sump/smashed radiator.

There are a lot reported hetre in the Manchester Evening News.
A lot are nuppets who follow a bus blindly but quite a few have been vehicles with sensors,
Buses, Ambulance and even a Fire Engine.
