Nissan Qashqai - Interesting (well to me anyway) - R.P.
Leading on from winding Humph up in the watch thread. I did some Wiki stuff on the model. Seems it's more British than Japanese...

We all know it's built in the UK, it was styled in Nissan's design place in London and engineered in Cranfield.

In my view the car's design has mellowed nicely now. I did briefly flirt with the idea of buying it.

I've considered one - not because I like it (neither do I dislike it) but it is cheap to lease, so I guess they hold their value well

I know someone who has two. They're OK. I would say they are ( to borrow an analogy from the other thread ) almost exactly like a Casio G-Shock. Quite clever. Very useful. Mildly trendy iin a no nonsense sort of way but somehow stumble on the desre / covet front.

I suppose I'd have another if it fitted my criteria at the time.

My father-in-law loved his, but it had lots of niggling problems, and the build quality didn't inspire confidence over the long term. As a car, it was superb though. Good to drive, lots of toys, excellent visibility, lots of space.

I looked at them when they first came out, and was put off by the back seats not folding anywhere near flat - about 30 degrees fronm the horizontal if I remember right. A stupid design fault - have they rectified it in the newer ones?

I loved mine (a 2.0dCi 4x4 Techna), apart from a rear shock absorber issue, I didn't have any problems. Technically I still own it, but I've been waiting 3 months to find out if it will be written off or not after an accident (not the fault of the insurer, they haven't yet been allowed access to the vehicle as yet).

>> apart from a rear shock absorber issue,

Both of ours had to have new rear shocks under warranty. Mine need doing again at 72k miles. Preposterous really.

Father-in-law's needed new rear shocks at 12k! Thermostat at 18k, heater control panel at 20k, front brake calipers at 22k....

I hated the instruments and that silly little display buried deep in the dial, but mostly the back was too high for the dog to jump in and out of.

I have to say that I have very negative feelings towards the Qashqai. It effectively ended a happy relationship that I'd had with Nissan for 17 years. In 2006 my Primera was up for replacement, and I was told that Nissan had stopped making them in favour of the Cashcow.

I know that the Qashqai is a decent car and sells very well indeed, but I am not a fan of the mock off-roader look, or the trend of style-over-substance that it seems to fit into. (OK - bit harsh, but I think you know what I mean).

So I couldn't buy a Nissan and went and bought the BMW instead, which I ended up loathing. The Qashqai gets part of the blame for this because it was the catalyst.

I think, having once again got used to the driving dynamics of a BMW and having the use of an MX5 that you would find a Qashqai a disappointing drive PU. They handle well enough but they don't especially encourage you to throw them about. At normal, well, legal-ish speeds they're fine but if you occasionally like to get on with it a Qashqai wouldn't be my first choice. Pleasant enough place to sit most of the time though. Depends what you want your car to do I suppose.

my parents love the squashy but dont like the instrument panel and you have to put your hand through the wheel to press buttons for the display and they complain of elbow room when you have a front seat passenger, however i like the ride very much and way better than my picasso

Ultimately Humph, that's why the CRV went, although it was a very worthy motor it was a trifle flabby where a BMW would never dare to be, that and lack-luster performance at certain critical speeds (joining motorways etc). The X1 is sharper in every respect. Driving the CRV compared to the X1 is the difference between SD and HD telly.
