...bonnet? Before the Jaguar thread gets swamped, post your measurements here.
Let's define our terms: bonnet length is the horizontal length (ie parallel to the ground) from the base of the windscreen pillar to the foremost point of the car. If you like you can also include the length (measured flat along the metal) of the opening lid bit, and whether it has nice gas springs to hold it up or a cheapie prop thing.

Wow! I only measured from the front edge to the back edge of the opening bit. This means mine are even longer than I thought!
Revised figures: Prelude 134cm (prop); XJS (facelift model) 161cm (struts).

X1 - a staggering 120cm 2x gas struts.
MX5 - is nearer a 130cm x not sure, but I seem to recall a prop.
The X1 has a more defined end bit.

I only have a short one on the CC3.
Measuring the panel only, it's about 85cm or 2ft 9ins.
Cheapo metal prop, although the tip is painted a jaunty yellow.
I reckon props have become generally shorter over the years, mostly because they are now mounted half-way along the inner wing, rather than on the bonnet's slam panel.

S60 128cm (94cm opening), gas springs
Verso 93cm (71cm opening), single very short prop.
Some clue there as to how the 4.4m-long Verso has space for seven while the 4.6m S60 is a squeeze for four.

Westfield - 179cm (101cm opening, four clips,lift off.)
Some clue there as to why there is only room for two seats!

MB, overall screen to front of bumper 140cm (55" in real money), to front edge of bonnet 115cm (44.5). Propped up by two tension springs in the side hinges, 2 position normal approx 60' (just spring tension but holds steady in strong winds) and fully upright 90' (locked in place), which you need if doing anything more than level checks under the bonnet seeing as the grille is part of the panel and bashed bonces on sharp edges result.
C2, 90 (35.5") and 70 (27.5") respectively, cheap and nasty wire stand one side, no lift assistance needed it weighs about the same as a bean can, underbonnet area primer painted only and not much room to spare.

S'bad enough having a gas strut (type) thingy on my WC seat!
Blimming thing, wasn't cheap either - what a stupid idea - a bog seat that lowers itself slowly,
I'll out the critter mucho pronto and get one of those 'nice' pine (effect) jobbies.

139cm length of the bonnet for the 7er, that puts the prelude measurement into perspective for me, that prelude has a long bonnet!

In some cases the bonnet would take some lifting without.
Gb's Merc has spring assistance.
The bonnet must weigh a fair bit as it is big, and includes the radiator grille.

The CC3 does, it has sound deadening underneath, and being so upmarket, a chrome strip on the front.
Also, it's opened by the ignition key.
How fascinating is that?

BMW have gone cheap and nasty - you used to have a little lever pop out of the grille when you pulled the bonnet release, secondary catch and to lift it without getting your fingers dirty....not any more..!

Better stick with my '04 Beemer then. Probably better built as well.
Though I wouldn't mind a new M3 for 6 months just to make absolutely sure...

In keeping with the thread title, which i'm sure we were all sorely tempted to put some innuendo in, keep that bonnet chastity lock well lubed Iffy, my mates Tranny has similar arrangement, it's been replaced twice at well over a £ton a time...part of the security system.

The Ceed is 90 / 120cm. The prop is hinged and clipped to the underside of the bonnet.

Well ... The Lancer is 37.5" (95cm) that's from the start of the hood next to the ww wipers to the bit you lift up,
But, to the extreme front of ze car it comes out at 43" (109cm)

Just to set gb's mind at rest, bonnet keyhole now lubed.
I don't have any proper stuff (graphite) to hand, didn't want to use WD-Sticky, so I compromised on my Aldi silicone spray.
I also did the driver's door lock, don't think I've ever used it, but the key now goes in and out more smoothly.

I can't believe I've just gone out and measured three car bonnets !
The old Vitara is 92cm..the new one is 90cm and the Jowett is a manly 114cm...but it prefers imperial !
SWM is out on patrol of the local shops in the Note ATM.
Bits of wire to support both Suzies but the Jowett has a hinged stay which straightens out as you lift the bonnet and locks in place.
I bet I'm the only one here who has a bonnet which takes the air cleaner up with it when opened !
