You guessed - autogearbox and mistaking brake and accelerator!

Funnily I enough I did it today too....although I was drving a hydrostatic dumper, and didn't park it on a SAAB. It is surprisingly difficult to take your foot of the throttle when it's going the wrong way....!

Brace yourself for the inevitable claptrap about Left Foot Braking.

No on here, HJ doesn't write here.

Here we go again... but tell me exactly how having your left foot ready over the brake wouldn't reduce the chances of an accident like this?
|
Because these accidents are caused by the elderly who press on the gas thinking its the brake. Even when it shoots forward they press harder.
Now given that
a: They cant even drive with only one leg to think about
and
b: They have never left foot braked for 50 years.
Do you really think that teaching them left foot braking would resolve this situation?
The only reason they have an auto is because they dont want to use the other leg.

What a stupid statement Z ~ there is more to driving a manual car than just pushing the clutch pedal down.
|
Agreed but as we are talking about legs, you will have to run with it.
Actually? no thinking about it, there is not more to it than pushing the clutch pedal down.
The reason people can only drive autos is they can not use the clutch pedal properly.

Yep! - I always read threads from the bottom up for some strange reason :)

Not quite. I drive an auto because I prefer it, not because I have to.
I don't find any difficulty operating the clutch pedal properly when needs arise, e.g on hire cars or courtesy cars.

I was talking about people who cant drive manuals. Not choice.

Indeed. Plenty of elderly folk around my area driving automatics, for obvious reasons.
|
I'd assumed it was due to them not realising it's in reverse, or failing to have proper control.
They'd press the accelerator and the car would lurch backwards, throwing their body weight forwards, which would cause them to press the accelerator further.
I sold a Vitesse to someone with a similar problem. They kangarooed it down the road in first when they tried to test drive it. I diagnosed their problem as them only ever having driven a much less powerful car. They pulled away and gave it too much throttle, the resulting acceleration startled them so they'd lift off, the resulting deceleration threw them forward pressing the accelerator, the resulting acceleration startled them.............. I told them to put it into second earlier, until they got used to it.

Ah! Thank you for the clarification.
