Dearer petrol/diesel, less journeys, lower economic performance........the roads are freed up for some richer individuals and the fewer lorries.

I think that fits in with my recent experience, on the whole there does seem to be less traffic right now.
|
Not in London yesterday ... IME that is.
|
Congestion HAS been less in the evenings recently, but in the mornings (between 0600 and 0630) I've found congestion actually WORSE on the M25 - anticlockwise after J16.
It's just sheer weight of traffic too. This stretch was widened not that long ago to four lanes as well!
|
I find that 5:30 to 7:30 is the busiest, but then I don't drive early in the mornings.
I find the rounds between 10:30-11:30 to be dead, and as is 1:00-2:30. I find 4:30-5:00 to be dead too.
Certainly seems less traffic now than they did in 2008 when I passed. Does anybody have any DSA pass rate figures? I wonder if they have increased since the recession due to less traffic?

I assume that's a reference to evenings?
I think those taking proper supervised tuition is down. And therefore pass rate will be down. Plus of course the cost of driving in the first place (petrol, insurance, MOT, tax disk, etc.)
|
You're right, I remember an ADI telling me that people always try and bodge tuition in times of a recession so you get a larger number of people who are not ready.
Yep, with reference to evenings I am finding 7ish extremely busy at the moment. Although there is a lot of roadworks in the area due to the tram extension.
I have always thought when petrol prices are high MPG improves due to less traffic. I would rather pay more and get there quicker personally.

I would say the two things I have noticed the most is that :-
1. most people are driving slower now (possibly to get better fuel economy).
2. when it is a school holiday (like half term this week), there is a huge reduction in traffic.
I cannot say I have noticed less cars on the road since the recession though.

This is happeneing as more and more people are able to/choose to work from home in the school holidays instead of having to pay for child care.
|
Now isnt that funny.
I have been driving the M25 for years, Last week It was empty, Today (ok its friday) kids are off and the m25 is at a standstill at 13:00 all round the western section. Services are packed with families and kids, clearly they are all coming back from wherever they went.
|
Yes - I suppose school holidays put a burden on motorways, but not necessarily on local roads.
|
It very much depends on the where.
|
Must admit I did a trip along the M56 to Manchester airport to pick someone up during "rush hour" a couple of weeks ago and there wasn't the usual standing traffic at Bowden at all - I just sailed straight through.
I was lucky with the next part of the journey though - the Marc's sat nav showed the M60 stopped past the Trafford Centre so I want the other way around and it was fine. Took under an hour to get from the airport to Bingley.

Blissfull, pity is doesn't last :)

Motorways are full of cars cruising at an indicated 70. That's certainly a turn up for the books. Makes for much more relaxing driving.
