*If you are not a Ford fan, that's okay, but watch this commercial. It's not what you think*,
Ford has not accepted a penny from the government bailout and should be marketing their action. But in my mind they have chosen to take a higher road...a road with class. Enjoy this to the very end.

The Mustangs of the 70s and 80s were a bit dodgy, but the rest look the absolute business.
Not sure which I'd rather have, a 60s Bullitt or a spankers new one.

The latest offering from that 'stable' don't do a lot for me really, but then that goes for most modern cars,
I got to work on some 70's/80's Mustangs + Firebirds, Comaro, Trans Am etc., etc., (not my cup o' tea)
I was checking out the Ferrari 612 that Harleyman mentioned yesterday, reminded me of my old 240Z :)

...I got to work on some 70's/80's Mustangs...
I remember watching a TV programme about a guy who owned the Bullitt Mustang, or at least one of the cars used in the film, because I expect there were several.
What struck me was how simple the car was mechanically, a sort of pumped-up Morris Marina.

A good advertising move, playing on the Americans high regard for their military personnel. It would not work in the UK.

I'm sure there is great regard for the military among the overwhelming majority of the population.
Some people feel intimidated into hiding their feelings by the vocal minority of Guardian readers, pacifists, and others who seek to undermine the military for their own ends.
I support our armed forces without question, including the wounded ones financially through charitable donation.
The rights and wrongs of a particular conflict is an entirely different matter.

What are they like to work on? I'd imagine fairly roomy under the bonnet? My lotto garage would have a yank muscle tank of some description in it.
I understand they're not the best to drive but i could live with that for the noise of some lumpy great cams.
I feel like i've missed out on the golden era of cars - that's no great hard ship, i've been fortunate enough to grow up in the golden era of computers, but still kind of wish i'd been around in the 60's / 70's.

Like any other car really - just more of it :) + they had carburettors then, mostly BIG Holley carbs IIRC, but at least they had electronic ignition, I suppose to drive a 'muscle' car in the US of A is somewhat different than trying to put the pedal to the metal in the sceptered isle :)

Good advert for the American market, doubt whether it would work over here, the UK has a different relationship with our military. Not better or worse just different. I drove a Mustang that self same colour last year in the states. Fur coat and no knickers was the summing up, cracking looking motor though, but no Golf GTi - I always wanted to drive one and I have....

Ah, PU, but that would have been a rental V6 perhaps? A drive in the Boss Mustang with the TracKey option is a different kettle of fish. Too hot for a fur coat and a spare pare of knickers would be a good idea :)

Oh I know Captain but my meagre pension wouldn't have stretched to one of those !

A proper 60s Shelby Mustang is a hell of a machine, a genuine brute muscle car with what Americans used to call 'beefed-up' suspension: lowered slightly with stiffer springs and very stiff shock absorbers. Probably an optional lsd as well.
Of course there weren't many of those. But even now they would certainly be preferable in almost every way to a 'spankers new one'. They would go better, make a better noise and be much stronger (mechanical simplicity is a virtue, Iffy!).
The spankers new one would be easier and less tiring to drive, more economical, far more refined and much less fun, as well as looking wimpy.
