Vicar sets motorcycle hearse world record

A vicar has beaten his goal in setting the world record for the speed of a motorcycle hearse carrying a coffin.

The Reverend Ray Biddiss, got his custom-made motorcycle hearse, called The Rocket, up to 114.1 mph in the attempt held at Elvington Airfield today.

Not a new idea. You can see this one in Gressenhall museum in Norfolk. The museum was once a workhouse and the motorcycle hearse was purchased as a cheap way to return dead inmates to their parish for burial.

I got overtaken by a 2008ish Merc E320 hearse on the M1 the other week, travelling a speed I'd conservatively estimate as a hell of a lot of mph. I gather "blowing the cobwebs out" is a recognised technique to keep them running properly.

An undertaker I knew used to carry a coffin in his Maxi.

With the seats folded, one would fit at an angle.

He had steel rails installed - at the correct angle - on the loadbay floor to make it easier to slide the coffin in and out.

The rails might also have gripped the coffin in some way.

He didn't use the Maxi for funerals, but for taking coffins wherever they need to go in the time leading up to the service.

My grandfather's funeral was in Co Galway Ireland about 20 years ago, the hearse was a then 10 + year old Granada, we all walked behind it to the church yard for what seemed like a couple of miles, the next day it over took us on the main Galway to Athlone, Dublin road to 90 + mph filled to the brim with hay bales to the extent that there were bits of hay sticking out around the rear door.

When I was working with Wiltshire Police years ago they nicked a Granada (I think it was) hearse with a loaded coffin aboard doing well over 100mph down the westbound slope of the A303 towards the Countess Roundabout at Amesbury.

Colleague of mine (who died young of throat cancer) was conveyed to his funeral in some sort of sidecar arrangement.
