 Volkswagen Polo V - Headlight converters - polo v
My polo has large plastic lensed h'lights with no markings. Iwant to holiday in France and with my old car I stuck black tape over markings on the glass lenses. My VW garage are telling me to fit lense protectors and then stick their expensive stickers to those to avoid damaging the plastic.
Does anybody have experience of sticking cheap stickers from say Halfords to plastic lenses please ??

Advice on this varies.

One opinion is don't bother with deflectors, after all, it's only the French who you might annoy.

Be careful what you stick on the lens because a mixture of the solvents in the glue and the heat from the bulb can melt the plastic, leaving a permanent mark.

Does it say anything in the handbook? - it does in some.

I dont bother any more, I just wind the levelling control down. Not taped up lenses since 2003.

Had no problem with that in France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland or Italy.

I've tried dropping my beams-OK on main roads but as soon as I turned off into country lanes,I had to put my lights back up and tape them so that I could see anything. My,and other's safety is worth a lot more than two pieces of sticky tape.

I have found taped lights and lights cranked down with the leveller to be very similar in effect, so I found no compromise in safety.

I have used plastic "beam benders' on plastic headlights. The adhesive can be a problem to get off but neat screenwash will do the trick.

However I think that modern beam patterns throw far less light to the left than did older headlights and if you do simply adjust your headlights down you are not going to cause any problems to oncoming cars on dipped beam.

In fact I rather suspect that we will end up with the same beam patterns as used in Europe where lights simply dip up and down and for that reason require no adjustment when driving in the UK

I therefore no longer bother to use "beam benders"

"Not taped up lenses since 2003."

Me neither. I just aim them low too. Done 90k around Europe in the last 7 years and been stopped several times by police but they've never shown the slightest interest in the lights.

Rightly or wrongly I've never used them either and indeed have never been challenged by any country's police on the subject or indeed been "flashed" by any other driver. I've been taking my car across Europe several times a year for 30 years. Maybe it proves nothing of course.
