What's the longest you've had out of a car battery? Mine has just failed at a little under eight years. I'm just waiting for the local Ford dealer to bring a new one. In my early motoring days, car batteries were guaranteed for two years ~ and generally they didn't last a day longer ~ so I'm not complaining about eight years for this one.

The one in my "old" Mondeo was 9 years old and had provided nearly 200k miles of service when I sold it. Might have been on its last legs of course but no signs of a problem anyway. That car didn't do many short runs which may have helped to preserve the battery though.

I've always found that the OEM version originally on a vehicle (also applies to exhaust systems as well) last far, far longer than subsequent replacements.
Longest use I've had from an original fit battery is eight-and-a-half years...:-)

get about 6 to 8 years out of them.

Same here, OEM ones tend to last around 8 years for me; SWMBO's Zafira one lasted 9 years / 130K miles of stop/start driving.

My S60 had its original battery (and exhaust system) when I sold it last year at 9 years old and 153k.
I replaced the original battery on the diesel Golf in January, also at 9 years, albeit slightly fewer miles (115k).
It is also my experience that the factory fit stuff lasts longer than even a dealer supplied replacement.

Original battery seemed fine on my Focus hatch when I sold it after seven years.
But when modern batteries go, they seem to go out like a light.
Years ago they conked out much more gradually.

I've found the same, although the Golf's battery did an old school slow conk out. Became sluggish on cold starts, slowly worsening over a period of months. The cold spell in December accelerated its decline to the point where I reckon it would have been a matter of days more before it failed to start the car after standing overnight. Even then though, it would spin the engine over fine when warm.

1998 Mazda Xedos on the original battery - 13 years - well almost!>>

My dear old dad bought a new Mk III Escort in 1983. In 1995 he decided to give up driving (in his 85th year) and gave it to me. I ran it for a further 10 years until it eventually gave up the ghost. It was only on its 2nd battery, which was still going strong at the time of the car's demise.

The Fiestas lasted just over ten years. The replacement lasted just over 2.5 years, the current one is about four months old now.

Replaced Mrs Dugong's Civic battery last year after 8.5 years from new. 8 years seems to be emerging as the standard lifespan!
