If only they knew. :)

I think that, bearing in mind the volume of stuff they handle, the %age failure/dissatisfaction rate with DVLA is a lot lower than, say, the average High Street bank.

I think we all tend to overestimate the problems with banks utilities and the like. I can't remember any issues with my banks over the past 40 years, nor indeed with the DVLA or my insurers but I do tend to read contracts and comply with my side of the deal. Most complaints seem to be about expecting something that you were never entitled to.

Most complaints I have seen are about not getting something that you were entitled to.

Had a complaint with Santander. I expected their information to be accurate, I expected them to be efficient, I expected them to be helpful, and most of all I expected them to be able to perform basic banking functions. I think I was entitled to that.

You certainly were. However there is no doubt that a lot of people blame banks for their own mistakes.

I never have had problems with any bank. My first accounts was Coutts, then Barclays, then finally Co-operatvive for the past 30 years so I have experienced the the full spectrum!. Never had anything resembling a problem. Was charged once for an unauthorised overdraught but charge was withdrawn after I sent a polite letter. Never paid a penny for banking services

...I never have had problems with any bank...

Nor have I.

The point about customers blaming the banks for their own failings is also a good one.

I've looked into banking complaints on behalf of a few people and often found they have lied and deceived the bank in the first instance.

Even if the bank has messed up in some way, the customer can have unrealistic expectations about compensation.

There seems to be a feeling that because the bank has loads of money it should pay out thousands for a simple mistake.

3 out of 4 complaints against Barclays were upheld by the FSA. About the same ratio for successful appeals against parking tickets. Don't let these commercial and quango giants grind you down and don't quit, if you have a case. Google for PPI insurance compensation if you think the the banks are nice squeaky clean people! They aren't!

I've had those problems with my local branch but Ted made sure they no longer addressed people as "mate".

"Barclays Bank has become Britain's most complained about finance brand, grabbing the title from Spanish-owned Santander. According to figures issued yesterday by the Financial Services Authority, there were nearly 10,000 complaints a day about finance institutions in the last six months of 2010, with Barclays attracting 276,315 new complaints.

The bank had 205,151 banking complaints in the second half of the year, a rise of 5 per cent over the first half. Antony Jenkins, the chief executive of Barclays Global Retail Banking, said: "We are working hard to identify the root causes of our complaints and put in place solutions to permanently fix the problems, reducing or removing the need for our customers to complain.""

I bet DVLA don't get that many complaints, in 6 months.

I applied to have funds tansferred fron one Santander account to another, on 8th April, and so far nothing has happened. My cash is in an account earning 0.5% awaiting transfer to one where it will earn 3.75%. Easy to guess why there is a delay

I've renewed my VED on-line several times now - it's never taken more than three or four days to turn up.

Always been happy with the efficiency of the DVLA, most unusual for a government body.
HMRC, on the other hand, is an entirely different matter. Their incompetence is beyond belief.
