Is it just me or is it starting to look like, erm, a Porsche 911??

Looks like a 911 blended into a current Beetle.

Still ugly though.

The revised but current Beetle on the VW website was the 'new Beetle'. Because all new/revised cars were parked as new. So we had the new Passat, New Jetta, etc. So will this be the new 'new' Beetle? Or the 2012 Beetle?

To be the shape is closer to the original Beetle. And that gave us the Porsche 911... so maybe it's no surprise there is some 911 DNA. And VW own Porsche now after the failed attempt of Porsche to buy VAG.

Seems to me that quoting a model year is an American habit. It will probably be just called "new" by VW in the UK.

It looks like the old new beetle with new rear lights and a tea tray..

The current Beetle is referred to as new.... so will this be the new new Beetle in the UK?

About time they changed the current "new" Beetle since its underpinnings are a 1997 Golf IV.

Which is may favourite Golf generation. I've driven the Mk V, but purchased an older Mk IV when I could have gone for a V. I'd be loathe to replace it with a V or VI.

Weird tastes, as usual.

I quite like it - looks better than previous 'new' Beetles and it still has the floor hinged accelerator of the old Beetle.
Volkswagen - 2012 Beetle to be launched - Alanovich
As did our VW Tourans, but not our MkIV Golf. I'm guessing here but I think the floor hinged pedal came back with the MkV generation of Golfs - is it also fitted to its sister cars in the VAG range? Does it also come in Polos, Passats, any other VAG ranges?

I hated them in the Tourans. They often got small stones stuck under them which would, of course, hinder the depression of the pedal. One such stone took me the best part of an afternoon to remove and almost sent me on mission to the dealers to get the pedal removed to get at the blasted stone.

I do not ever want a floor hinged pedal again.

I think the Passat has floor mounted accelerator pedal.
Volkswagen - 2012 Beetle to be launched - Alanovich
That's off the list then.

Oh Heck. What about Phaetons? I'll have to reconsider my obsession if they have vile floor mounted pedals.

I was all but stranded almost two years ago in my MK5 Golf when such a foreign body got jammed in the pedal mechanism. There was just sufficient movement to limp to a nearby SEAT dealer late on Friday on a very warm Summer's afternoon.
They very kindly took my car straight into their workshop and removed the offending I got my car back within 45 mins.
I may be doing VW dealerships a disservice but somehow can't imagine they would have been so accommodating.
The SEAT dealership was the one just outside Westerham in Kent. Very nice people and reasonable too.

We loved our MK IV so I don't blame you but...

We had a MK IV GTi and after an interlude a MK VI SE, the MK VI 'felt' a lot like the MK IV with great cabin ambience from the trim materials plus comparable general build quality. The MK VI also rode much better, handled better and went better with only a 1.4l TSi engine whilst using less fuel in a heavier, better equipped, safer and more spacious car which also cost GBP 1,000 less to purchase new 9 years after our MK IV (so significantly less in real terms).

I think it's called progress !

Hmm. Thanks.

Might re-look at the MkVI when the time comes then. I just didn't like the MkV and I suppose I'm judging the MkVI unfairly on that.

Well we twice considered the MK V and bought something else (a Focus then a Civic) so I guess we felt the same, when we test drove the Golf VI the decision to purchase was immediate although it was worth shopping around for the best deal.

The current 'new' Beetle was referred to as the 'New Beetle' by VW. The new 2012 will just be the Beetle.

I prefer to look but asked my wife and she didn't like it. So it does appeal to blokes more which was the intention. She liked the last one. And because of the intention to appeal to blokes it does not have a vase on the dash.

The original new Beetle was not as popular as intended... wasn't it only built in Mexico in the end? I bet they hope for better sales with this one. Not that it sold badly.

Pleased to see it has a lot bigger boot. Wonder if the rear passenger space is any better?
