SWMBO - new car on the way but which? - Falkirk Bairn
I am nearly finished my Chemo and Spring is here - a new motor sounds good. Budget is up to £20K.

So far a most makes / cars have been disregarded - Looking at Japanese wherever they are made.

Looked at Legacy ES - new 2 litre estate @ £22K list - too big (it is huge compared to 09 model), 2nd hand £18K Legend (09) again too big (NOT MY WORDS but the other half's but it is really nice with lots of toys) - Accord did not go down well - too expensive new when a few toys are needed /asked for.

Toyota - did not see anything in new / near new that appealed. DiL has RAV4 so no copying.
Nissan - Qashquai - already have an Xtrail so we are avoiding wearing similar badges
Mazda - again nothing exciting............

Saw a base Subaru Forester @ Motorpoint under budget but again few toys on the X model - I thought it was fine

What do you think is worth a look?

Well first and foremost FB, glad to hear your health is on the up !

Scooby sounds nice. Wouldn't dismiss the Qashqai quite so quickly though. We've got two of them and while we took some matching jumper stick at first no-one stopped speaking to us ! Good cars. My wife loves hers and I rub along fine with mine although I might want a change in due course.

I'm obsessing over Skoda Yeti's just now but it's impossible to get a bargain on a really well spec'd one, and in your case no use since it ain't Jap :-)

Only Subaru really do anything for me from the Jap machines, undeniably good though the others are. If the Forrester's no use, the sedate versions of the Imprezza might be worth a gander.

Lexus IS, and did you consider a Prius whilst looking at Toyota's.

Left field...new Magentis out soon if it's not already, might be worth a poke nose.

I used to want a Legacy 3.0R so badly, the new model doesn't nothing for me, TBH none of their recent stuff has.

As above, good to hear things are improving healthwise.

Have a look at the Mitsubishi ASX, the Qashquai rival. They do a 4x4 version, and the diesel is powerful and economical, apparently the first diesel with variable valve timing. Reviews all rate the car.

Kia Sportage? ... I'm a jap fan too, but I'd consider the Sportage if I was looking at SUV's.

Also the Hyundai ix35.

Petrol as mileage is low and I do not want a DPF problems

Does it have to be new, new?
I thought long & hard about getting a Spec B Tourer before deciding on my '04 330Ci , buying a trailer and fitting a towbar. Admittedly I cannot transport loads as fast (most of the time!)
Petrol costs are not an issue for me as I only do 6k a year in the car. Depreciation is the killer.I reckon now is an excellent time to buy second hand a big petrol engined car.
