It's often said that some people would buy anything if it had a BMW badge on it.

A neighbour bought a new C class several years ago. He admits it's too low, the suspension's too hard and it's rusting away. He keeps looking at the same brand.

His wife recently blew her retirement lump sum on an A class.

I think they bought them for the key fob.

Would they be fooled if I rebadge my Kia Ceed? :-)

I bet they would ;)

I am surprised that so many people then understand difference between AWD/RWD/FWD.
Call me optimistic :)

For '1 series' read 'Breadvan'. I digress! Hopefully they'll never get in a situation where it matters that they know which are the driven wheels. Although judging by this if they do have a clue what do, 4 out of 5 will crash for applying the wrong solution. Aren't these people akin to the 2 ton 4x4 owners who think their cars offer the last word in grip?

But the understanding only goes as deep as understanding that a "GL" badge is better than "L" (showing my age there!). As for understanding what it means...

BMW is a hugely aspirational brand and 1 series ownership is the cheapest way to attain membership of the BMW 'club'. I don't think owners care whether the car is FWD or RWD, the main thing that matters is the badge on the bonnet. The 1 series is up against cars like the Golf and Focus and despite having less space and practicality, it costs more and is more sought after.

What is more surprising to me from this article is BMW introducing front and 4wd for anything up to 4.3 metres long.
Previously BMW have resisted the move in their quest for perfect balance.

Having never owned a BMW I test drove a used 1 Series recently, quietly expecting to fall in love and want it on first drive.

What a disappointment it was - the hype about the ultimate driving machine may well apply to the M series cars, but this one drove like a VW Golf.

So I bought a VW Golf and saved a fortune. Maybe BMW are relying on their brand image too much

>> BMW is a hugely aspirational brand

They're not the only one. In one of the car magazines with a breakdown of every model on sale in the back, the pithy one-line range descriptions (think "Reliable, roomy value hatchback", or "The last word in executive luxury", for the A-Class and CLC both read simply "Gotta have a Mercedes". ;-)

You don't buy a 1-series because you really want a 1-series.
You buy it because you really want a 5-series, and this is the first step on the ladder.
They move up to a 3-series when they trade in the 1er. They plan sometime to move up to a 5.

I got this from my dealer, who tells me all about the carp from BMW as well, so he has credibility.

I just laugh at those type of drivers. My uncle has a BMW 5 series and its a fairly high spec one, he is an AIM and usesd o train cops how to do persuits so it only seems right he should have something like a BMW.

I just laugh at all the blonde dolls driving around in their over priced 1 series thniking they are cut above the rest of us only for me to kill them at at the lights because I know how to change gear properly!

People buy them for lots of good and silly reasons - what is beyond doubt as lease cars they can come in as cheap as a Fiesta and if you buy them privately they have better residuals than most. The base 1 series is a grand more than a base Astra - guess which one will be worth most in three years ?

Anyway motoring has always been driven by aspiration....

Its not quite as simple as that though, because you could get huge discounts on the Astra, where as the BMW you won't. So although list prices may appear similar the BMW will cost so much more to buy. That said it might not cost as much as you think come trade in time, but then assuming APR is the same on both cars the BMW will cost more to finance too.

My dad was offered a 1 year old Lada for £2800 in 1992, when he did the maths he realised it would be worth just £500 two years later, so 5 year old Escort made much better sense at that money. In the end he bought a four year old Lada for £800 with warranty. He kept that car for six years until it rusted away.

Current Fiesta cost us £800 to buy too, we've had it nearly three years now BUT the suspension has costs a lot to repair but it should easily pass the next MOT yet again.

Its probably worth around £500 now.

So even with repairs for the money its been damn cheap motoring but then it is still a very old rusting Fiesta and most people don't want to drive round in such an old car - me included.

Getting a discount is easy for a fleet user or if you have now

I have never criticised anyone's choice of car - each to his own really - but there is a venomous side to people when it comes to cars which I find difficult to understand, it doesn't happen with bikes...
