What if wanted to replace my fabulous Jag XJS ( unlikely, but what if?)
I would need 5 seater.
Coupe/ 4 door / 5 door / don't mind
Plenty of wood/leather and luxury all around
Awesome sports performance
Manual gearbox
Old enough design that I can pick up a used one in clean nic for under £8K
Modern enough that it won't disintegrate and be reliable
Perferably smaller (quite a bit smaller) than my Jag
Based upon recent experiences:
1. a Jag 4 door XJR saloon would be on of my list, but no getting away from the Arthur Daley image as far as Mrs G goes, so probably a non starter
2. BMW 5 Series not for me I'm afraid, theres too much BMW in my street, and everytime I have driven one I have not enjoyed it,
3. My old Merc CLK320 was the most uninspiring drive ever, I wouldn't go back to that
4. Going back further, my Nissan 200SX Turbo was too lethal in the wet and too easy to put in a ditch
5. Suburu Imprezas / Mitsubishi EVOs are just too low rent interior wise, and too boy racer image wise
Here's some ideas:
Rather large:

Still a Golf!

Could definately be tempted:

Would I be mad? (Crap listing, terrible photos, but always been a car I fancy)

Any more ideas?

The best Alfa 166 money can buy.
Or, if you want to be seriously silly, VW Phaeton W12. Unsure if you can get a manual though.
I'm now 2 years away from breaking the news to my missus that we're getting a Phaeton. 2 years to go on my three year plan. It will seem like forever. Although I might sober up and go for an XF at the last minute.

166 or 156? the 166 is getting very old now, it will be hard to find a decent one...
156 3.2 V6 would go in the list of "could be tempted"

VW Phaeton, just TOO big, nice car though

166s were sold here up to and including 57 reg. Must be some good ones around still. 159 an option?
Are there any XF variants which could tempt you?
Any Audi A6s?

When you tell the wife it will be a 'phaeton accompli'.

He'll have his phaetonder the desk?

How about a proper XJS, i.e. a convertible, preferably in white.

Love 8 series's, the problem is they seem to have just passed the dip in their values ~2 years and the prices are going upwards again :-(
There's a banana yellow 850i with some of the Alpina gear near me, not pristine but not a shed either, it's been up for £12k for as long as i can remember but i see it's now up for £15k

Slight drift....
Skoda, do you manage to sell your 7 series?

No, doesn't look like it'll be worth it right now, it wont sell for enough to get what i want. Ho hum. Sticking some extra pennies in the savings just now and will have another think at the end of the autumn.
Turning my attentions to the Golf, it *needs* to go, i loathe it but M loves it. I've spruced it up to the best of my ability and it's in alright condition for the age now (lots of stone chipping on the front, previous owner was clearly a tailgater). Although M wants the only 4x4 we can't source... a Suzuki Vitara 3 door auto.

no I need to be able to fit people in the back without them complaining, otherwise wouldn't even think of changing my XJS...
Sorry for me, as far as XJS's go mine is perfect.

Convertibles No! sorry, don't have a garage and longterm keeping them outdoors is just too risky
The red BMW Alpina looks gorgeous, uintil you see the interior, black plastic everywhere, NOT for me I'm afraid. need to get passed that 80s look
Jag S Type R is a good thought

Guy, that looks pretty well cared for. Are you sure you want to change? I can't imagine you're going to get something that's been cared for at that level very easily.
|
thank you for the compliment, thing is any time I say "lets take the jag" whoever has to go in the back just moans...
|
Guy - you did say it must be manual in your OP, which a lot of the bigger suggestions aren't. Does that requirement still stand?
|
its alll conjecture, but I LOVE the manual box in my XJS and drove an auto back to back to compare. It was driving a manual VW Polo after an auto CLK320 that helped me rediscover the joys of driving with feel!
