Motherwell to Mansfield for midday - Skoda
Looks like i need to make a trip down to Mansfield, probably a week on Monday. Aiming to arrive around midday so a ~7am departure.

I'll check HA website before i set off on the day, but Google's giving me 3 routes and while i'm fairly set on the first one i think, it's always good to know pitfalls of your alternative options.

M6 -> A66 -> M1 -> M18 = 258 miles. Any hold ups or problems likely on the M1 -> M18 stretch? Drove to the end of the A66 last week and up to that point i know this route is pretty decent.

Manchester way -> M6 -> M61 -> M60 -> M67 -> short A road journeys -> M1 = 274 miles. Is the manchester ring road asking for trouble?

Leeds way -> M6 -> Outskirts of Leeds involves some B roads and google tags this route as the longest driving time -> M62 -> M1.

VAG have finally turned on ECU protection on the new Petrol engines, been active on the Diesels since ~this time last year. The wee device for applying my remap can't connect to the ECU so i'll need to visit the supplier to have the ECU removed and bootstrapped to allow the re-flash.

500 miles in a day, just as well the car's comfy :-)

Cancel this, ECU's not protected. Just the dolt operating the device... :-)

Roadworks all gone from the M18 now, but I'd still be inclined to join the M1 at the top (East Garforth) - it's 3 / 4 lanes all the way instead of the 2 lane A1 Doncaster / M18 stretch.

This being an internet forum, I will instantly post the contrary point of view. :)

The M1 through Leeds is a lot longer and also sends you past the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield, which can be jammed.

The A1(M) link to the M18 is three lanes for a stretch, and tends not to get busy.

The A1/M18 junction can be busy as can the several Doncaster junctions, though unlikely outside of peak times.
I too would use A1/M18 in preference though...being already on the A1 should there be problems around Woodall services gives several options.

Don't understand why it takes you M1-M18. i.e. leave the M1 for the A1M just south of the A64 and rejoin the M1 just south of Sheffield . . .

I prefer that route as it is slightly shorter but generally the quicker route is to stay on the M1 and risk Leeds and Meadowhall.

That section of the A1M only has a short length of 2 lane now (M62-M18) with the rest being 3 lane and fairly new. It also increases the diversion options if there is an issue on the M1 by coming into Mansfield from the east.

I wouldn't go there.

We have an office near J31 of the M62, mid way between the M1 and A1M.
Anybody heading south from there will usually head A1M then M1, as it is usually quicker(*) and marginally less boring

(*) excepting the monthly 'lorry falls over at Darrington' scenario

Dunno what it means.

Thought it might be some form of Scots argot.

Thanks for all the replies, insight tucked away for future ref anyway :-)

I was a bit hasty asking for advice it seems and i was otherwise idle at the time and planning ahead :-) It's good to be prepared.

The sandwich bar on the A66 westbound just west of Scotch Corner is excellent.

Good, simple food served in man-sized portions.

About a third of the price of Scotch Corner services.

enjoyed the alliteration in the title anyway

You need to go up, maybe slightly east of tyro to get some properly impenetrable speak.

"Foos yer doo's". Literally, how's your pigeons?

= How are you?
