Blackpool to Cambs - Overnight family stopover? - Fenlander
Going to be in Blackpool for a couple of nights in July and wondered about breaking the return journey to Cambridgeshire (usually M61/M62/A1) with an overnight/extra day somewhere.

Any ideas for an area/town/city that might provide interest for the family (teen girls remember) to stopover for 24hrs?

I would go for the Peak District. That way you get to see some hill country which is nice for a change if you live in a lowland area. Around Bakewell is very pleasant.

Bradford would be a slightly left field choice.

Well-regarded as a short stay destination by those in the know.

Friend of mine goes a few times a year and rates it highly.

Might be something to tempt the Fenlanderettes as well.

best thing about bradford is the quick motorway link out
someone even stole the middle of the town and noone noticed a few years ago
is your mate a friend of the manningham area?

I was going to suggest the very enjoyable Museum of the Moving Image at Bradford, the one with Europe's biggest iMax screen, and many archives, and all sorts of televisual and cinematic goodness. Mrs C and I spent an entertaining afternoon there some years ago.

But I discover that it's now closed. What happened to all the stuff I wonder?

Wow - thanks Bellboy. Changed it's name, the slippery little devil. Might well be heading for Bradford then, just to see it again.

Might also combine that with a revisit to the excellent Leicester Space Museum actually. I feel a long weekend coming on.

Another vote for the peak district, plenty of options for visits, if the ladies need retail therapy this is in the area, although the mention of coach parties would put me off. Nothing worse than a pack of maruding pensioners. :-)

True... we've felt somewhat swamped by the beige cardigan brigade at similar places in Scotland. The kids seek Jack Wills, Hollister, H&M, Primark etc.

Thinking about it I reckon we'll avoid the built up areas and look more at the Peak District. Perhaps a modest cost country hotel with nearby walks.

Bakewell area is very nice, Chatsworth just over the hill. Haddon Hall just to the south.

Not too far from Alton Towers if the girls are that way inclined.

Cafe above the Bakewell Pudding shop is good.

Never been into Peak Village - doesn't appeal. There used to be some retail outlets at the Chatsworth Farm Shop but not been in for a while.

Some nice walks from the car park near the Garden Center in Chatsworth grounds.

Alternately some interesting museums (e.g. Derby Industrial Museum with lots of RR gas turbines) and shops for the girls (Westfield) in Derby.

ps Might be worth checking rates at the Izaac Walton Hotel - at the car park for Dovedale.

>>Derby Industrial Museum

I *think* it's closed or mothballed at the moment, and the re-opening date hasn't been announced yet. I would double check before travelling to it.

I suggest Little Hulton :). Just go around saying how you think all Salfordians are scum. It will be an experience you will never forget trust me :D.

In all seriousness Derbyshire would be a good stop off.
