Drove a few miles on these this weekend, had forgotten how long they were. Seems most sections would be ideal candidates for conversion to an autobahn type road. The roads, the junctions and the surroundings all conducive to much more effective transportation.
As for the cameras cut crashes nonsense, no they don't, the camera vans on the bridges cause Mr frustrated mercedes driver to jam on the anchors from 90 down to a wholly unreasonable 60 just as he swings in front of you. The camera did nothing positive in that situation but we only record their "successes" not their failures, on an otherwise deserted 3 lane motorway in good weather. Annoys me that because that type of situation doesn't appear on anyone's spreadsheet, it doesn't exist when it comes time to make decisions.

Couldn't agree more, there are some very long stretches, I think its the M74 at this point, that you can see for a good mile or two.
I used to count on a steady 90+ for some stretches of the M74 but since camera vans came to the fore its been a GPS cruise control 77.

You are brave, I use cruise and satnav 75 on the M74. There are as many unmarked traffic cars as camera vans, often sitting on the "on" slip roads.
