Ford Focus III - Seat comfort - L'escargot
One of the attractions when I bought my current 2003 Focus Ghia was that the seats were fairly flat and comfortable. Most of the others, except for the bottom of the range variants, had bolstered "Sports-style" seats which I can't tolerate. I've found from previous experience that the bolsters press on my thighs and cause painful bursitis which doesn't go away until I get a car which has comfortable un-bolstered seats. I've just been looking through the October 2010 edition of the catalogue for the outgoing Focus, with a view to buying a used equivalent of my current car, and I find that only the bottom of the range has what are described as "Comfort-style" seats and all the rest are described as having "Sports-style" seats. It'a almost as if Ford are admitting that the "Sports-style" seats aren't comfortable enough for some people. Limiting "Comfort-style" seats to the bottom of the range variant must surely have an effect on sales figures.

Its nothing of the sort. Its Ford saying "comfort seats" are cheap and plain and in some way inferior to those further up the range.

It does - its a sales way of making people buy further up the range and spending more money. They don't want you to buy the base model, there is more profit in upper models. Ford are implying that "comfort seats" are inferior to bolstered seats, that's why they are only offered on base models.

In truth most people prefer a small level of bolstering to seats as it holds you more firmly in the seat, tho the very large bolstering of sports seats can go to far the other way if you are errr - Portly.

That's a Focus II then.

I agree with Z, the terms "comfort" and "sport" are more marketing rather truly descriptive.

I was just going by the forum Make/Model category for the Focus. It gives Focus II as being 2004-2007, and Focus III as being 2008 onwards. A new Focus range came out at the beginning of March this year.

That's wrong, it has been carried over from HJ, Ford call the 04 - 10 Focus the Focus II with the '08 on models being a facelift.

The just launched Focus is the Focus III

The Ford catalogues all just say "Focus".

Although interestingly on some BMWs (and Mercs IIRC) 'comfort' seats are a much more expensive option than 'sports' seats. However, if you don't chose either you presumably get uncomfortable non-sporty seats ;-)

For me the benifts of 'sports' seats (as fitted to Audis and BMWs at least) are the extendable thigh support and wider range of adjustments.

Not suggesting this is an answer for anyone else.

The leather MB coupe's seats are very comfortable but even though they have heaters still gave SWM a not needed cold shock on wintry mornings.

So i bought a custom made heavy sheepskin cover, colour correct and cut precisely for the seat in question, not only did that cure the cold shock it makes for a pleasant seat in summer and holds you in a cozy way.
It is very comfortable, doesn't move in place and despite 7 years use is as good as new.

Worth a nose if interested, not cheap but good seldom is. www.easirider.com/
