Having lined up that Micra, ive now got a firm offer on my sisters Vitara on which ill make £250 profit, this is before I have even bought it from my dad. Hmm, ill just be off to play the lottery, its a good month! Now, unless this Micra turns out to be life changing, which I somehow doubt, Im going to need to replace it with something as the Vitara deal isnt one Im about to turn down in a hurry. So, any suggestions? Im sort of tempted by bangernomics again, but such has been the reliability of my Charade, Im a little spoilt now. Im prob looking at spending £1500-£2000 ish, certainly no more. Decent hatchback or estate, nothing mechanically complex and pref with not too expensive road tax. Also, 35 mpg+ would be nice. Any ideas? My first two ideas were a Hyundai Lantra estate or a Honda Civic estate, or even perhaps a Rover 400 Tourer with the diesel engine. All seem cheap as chips these days. Im not sure really what I want, just not something dull that ill want shot of after a week! Interesting suggestions invited! Now you say it, I always fancied one of those fastback 323s, mid 90's ones. Couldnt afford the V6 version but they did a 1.8 I think. Hmm, good call! Reply to this message | Report message

The strange thing I found about the Rover was the lack of respect shown by other road users - I got cut up, not let out, and generally obstructed far more than in any other car I'd ever had. I could only put it down to the "image" of that shape 200/400 being a bit council-estate... I didn't notice that treatment either in the Carina E that preceded it nor the Escort currently. Yes, I can see where your going with that - bit fragile though arent they? I had a customer with a 156 saloon and he cursed the day he bought the thing and he had the money to fix it! I was thinking about the 33 wagon at work today - no more reliable for sure, but if there are any left, must be worth small change by now. Could I really give in to an Alfa... The 33 Sportwagon is quite possibly my favourite car of all time (Alfasud is the only competitor). I would love a 4wd version. My 33s were horrendous in terms of reliability, but did I ever regret owning them? No. Reply to this message | Report message

I know I know, but anything of reasonable size will do - funny but insurance seems to hardly vary at all - I can insure a 4.0 Jag for £8 a month more than my Charade - how mad is that! Im just getting ideas together atm, really a smallish, charcterful estate is what Im after I think - like the previously mentioned Alfa 33 Sportwagon - now that is the kinda car that peaks my interest. I just dont want something that everyone has, I want people to enquire about it, stare even. Ive had cars like that before and they are always the most satisfying. Ive had a lilac Daihatsu for two years - that was practical and sensible - its crazy time now :-) Reply to this message | Report message

Ive driven both and they leave me cold, ive been in the trade for nearly 13 years, so ive driven most mainstream cars extensively - it takes something a bit more unusual to catch my attention these days. They are common - theres thousands of them around! Its not snobbery, its sales figures. The last Ford that managed to turn my head was a Scorpio Cosworth back in the late 90's. Ive owned several Fords and I could never wait to get shot of them, same for Vauxhalls. Competant, sure, but interesting, umm, no. Reply to this message | Report message
