Best European Road Atlas (the sat nav will fail when you need it)

Best deal for short-term european breakdown cover (there are plenty of companies on the comparison sites, but I have no idea of how good any of them are)

If you look carefully you can normally find a line in a remaindered book shop - maybe a year out of date- for about 1.99 rather than 12.99 or 9.99!

Er... thirded I guess. However I also found my Garmin satnav to be invaluable when navigating the Paris Peripherique and whatever the Brussels equivalent is too...

Re Breakdown Cover, I have always had it but never had to use it (4 short trips a year) so I have no idea of the difference in service between expensive but reputable AA and £4 a day cheapies!

If you already have UK cover,contact them-mine offered the extra for the EU unbelievably cheaply.(a lot less than £4/day). This even improved my UK cover at the same time.

Tho I have never had a sat nav fail just when i needed it, unlike my navigator Nicole!
