Are they not the fuel computers the hyper milers use? You been hanging about with ON too long? :-P
You should be able to use any of those type of tools - you'll only need to query engine ecu codes, and most of the VAG codes for anything engine, especially emissions, related have corresponding obd codes so generic tools should do the job no bother.

You may find that warning lights clear after a number of full cycles of engine use - fully warmed up, driven about, left until stone cold, and repeat - maybe three times, IF the underlying cause of the light has cleared.
Besides which, isn't "www.vagcom.co.uk/" the way to clear things up on VAG chariots, if there is a permanent problem?
