 San Francisco - Ted

An interesting trip down Market Street in 1906.

Lots of traffic, most cars have the hoods down,
There are some big tourers here, love to know the makes...probably a few now long forgotten

There's some frame slip but it settles down.

Thanks for that, I wonder if the before was actually filmed from a trolleybus as everyone seems very blase about crossing directly in front of it!

Spooky viewing the two side by side.

I thought trolleybus, but surely even in those days people would have a better sense of self preservation than some of those ambling in front of such a machine, plus too many pedestrians taking a keen interest in the moving vehicle.
I wonder if it could have been filmed from one of those hand pumped rail carts...often seen in the likes of Oliver and Hardy or Keystone Cops footage.

Its a cable car, you can see the centre cable slot. They are not fast, so people do amble around in front of them, you can even jump on and off as they move.

Bunch of fun loving chaps there, and nothing wrong with that.

I had a memory slip earlier, should have said Laurel and Hardy.

From the video on the left pre-Earthquake I'd say it's the cable cars too. The cable which the trams/cars latch onto (literally) runs underneath and is on a loop. The tram will latch onto the cable (lots on here will have seen the driver pulling big levers). The brakes are basically lumps of wood!

Interesting find Ted!

In the cable car museum they have a very good exhibition of the '06 earthquake.

There is no cable car down Market Street any more, the only three lines running are

Powell and Hyde, Powell and Mason, both terminate at the edge of Market and Powell,

and the California line that Terminates at the edge of Market and California.

Manchester had single deck trams on the 53 route. This was because of a low bridge in Longsight.

They had open platforms at each end and were soon nicknamed the ' California Cars

Interesting to see the huge ' Sightseeing Car ' that crosses in front of the camera at one stage.' .

Here's a modern view of the same trip shot in 2005.

Trams are now overhead power and trolley buses run as well.

Now that is clever.

looking at the original "before" footage, a lot of the people know there's a camera on the front of the "trolley car": they lurk in shot too long after crossing.
