What can you buy to make your tyre walls look shiny and black? I saw an aerosol can of foam being used in a new car showroom once, and my X3 has just come back from a service with clean bodywork and clean tyre walls. Looks very sharp and I'd like to buy whatever they use?!
I remember in the 70s a tin of tyre wall black which looked essentially like paint and was indeed applied with a paintbrush..?!
A mobile tyre fitter replacing two of my tyres told me not to use these products for keeping the sidewalls black. He said it weakened them. I was under the impression they were supposed to protect the rubber from harmful UV radiation that breaks the rubber down over time. I'm still none the wiser.
I think the foams are best, rather than the over-glossy wet look dressings.
You can buy it anywhere that sells car essentials.
Prices vary wildly from £1.50 - £6 and they all seem much the same.

Hi Corax
sadly your tyre fitter may be right. I must confess I use the spray on stuff myself as it does finish a wax job off nicely but iether tyres are even worse than they used to be or its the tyre blcak thats caused the side walls to perish on my cars and caravan ! The caravan tyres had badly perished on the outside in 2 years from brand new. Even the dealer was concerend and checked the code for age but they were about 2.5 years old. The tyres were ok on the inside and the I do use tyre covers so it wasnt the sun.
My C1 and fiesta tyres on the rear have badly aged as well ! ooopppssss

Well, well, interesting. I don't use anything now - just give the beast a sloosh over and keep it well maintained, it's getting too old for all that detail work :)
Must say that I never noticed the sidewalls aging when I used it (Autoglym Tyre Dressing).
lots of old tyre valve rubbers (used) in a clean paint tin covered in thinners
leave to rot for a week
then with a brush dunk in and coat your tyres
its an authentic tyre black as used by s/h tyre dealers
Someone once told me that they used to apply 7up to their tyre walls and it gave them a brilliant sheen. Didn't fancy trying it though. Wouldn't be much fun in summer returning to your car to find your wheels covered in bees...
