Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - BobbyG
Saw my foirst Audi A1 today - really ugly from the back and awkward from the front.

Reminded me of a Proton - Savvy or something like that?

This, from the Audi website, only seems to show the top of the range model - was a lower end model I saw

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! :-)
I've only seen a couple of Audi A1's so far. One was red and the other silver. They both looked quite handsome and classy to me, and unmistakenly Audi (which is high praise).

Just a tad too small for me, unfortunately. I'd like a smaller car, but I need something bigger since I always seem to be carrying plenty of stuff around.

Seen them n the road, look ok to me.

Like a great big bag of bad words for Munich's finest :-(

Touche! :-)

Actually one of your namesakes would be quite tasty.

:-) Ahh i saw that, i like the idea of the tablet PC that integrates with the dashboard in the concept car.

Apparently they're looking to do a brand new model every 6 months. I guess the "joyster", their version of the Scirocco, is up next - hopefully with a better name!

So "Sorry I didn't see you" will become "Sorry I was using my PC" after a collision, it could not be called an accident.

Steering wheel controls ON.

Touch screen is crap in a car, you can't feel the on screen buttons, so you're right of course but there's ways round it.
Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Old Navy
I think "screen" is the key word there, a PC screen must be the ultimate distraction with an endless variety of work and leisure options. Grand Theft Auto on the M6, spreadsheet on the M40 anyone? And don't say no one would do that, you can't cure stupid.

You're right again, but have you seen the instrument cluster in the new XJ :-) Want want want want !!

^^ Missing Peter Capaldi's attempts at doing a posh voice over, he sounds so strange when he's not verbally ripping someone a new one in that show, can't remember the name but the film version "In The Loop" is worth a giggle. The main jag site has the proper version but CBA trying to link to it.

OK, maybe when I win the lottery. :-)

Gotta agree with the OP - saw one today on the A1 near Edinburgh in a pastel shade (pale blue I think).

The rear looks unfinished and the 'clam' bonnet is cack.

Prefer the Mk6 Golf/Octavia for similar/less cash.

Gave up looking when they wanted to charge €62.47 for an iPod connector on what was a €30,000+ car

Looks just like a small SEAT with a few extra coaching lines... Not ugly, just bland...
 Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - -
Ok then, without insulting anyone purposely, i dislike the thing intently, but then i dislike the bland butt ugly shapes of nearly all recent cars equally, with notable exceptions.

It's just another one of millions of clones on the road.

It does have one saving grace, it hasn't followed the high waistlined wedge shape of recent years, however that's not to say that it's any easier to see out of the thing, and i have no intention of ever sitting in one to find out.

Nice one GB, you've neatly summarised all that is wrong with current designs. Take a stroll through any supermarket carpark and to me, not one maker has a car which stands out from the crowd.

Saw this in a car park yesterday.

Stand out it did.

Yeah, you're right. That IS ugly! Eeeeeuuuuwwww!
What's with the backwards-pointing fin shape that sticks up from the bodywork behind the doors? Looks like an Airfix model that someone has assembled wrongly.

You should see it with its daytime running lights on. I am not sure if its the work of genius or insanity. Time will tell.

My problem with many new cars is that the 'stylists' have had too much input into them so that what is supposed to be a 'pratical' car according to the blurb becomes totally the opposite... I recently looked at a 3008 and the inside was not at all that impressive...

Ordinary cars like the A1 never will be particularly stylish, they never were, look at the most common cars of any decade... You can hardly tell them apart... There were exceptions, but they are few and far between... Critisising the current crop of bread and butter cars and hinting that older cars were somehow more stylish, in my eyes at least, is wrong..

If I want something that will stand out from the crowd I'll look at a specialist car, such as a sports car... All I want from my daily car is for it to be practical and economic... Quirky looks I can live with... So from that point 'Euroboxes' just don't bother me as long as some idiot at the design stage has messed around inside and mad them un-liveable-with!

I dont know how anyone can call the current Fiat 500

a: the same as every other car
b: ugly
c: a car that doesn't stand out.

I first saw one three or 4 years or so ago. It looked gorgeous then, inside and out, and it still does. Its hasn't dated (unlike some) and it will still be a classic looking car in 30 years time.

There is still a lot of good car design going on.

You "don't know"??? Use your imagination, Man! Don't you recall the old sayings, such as:
"One Man's meat is another man's poison", and,
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

Beauty is all subjective. Personally, I don't know how anyone can call the Fiat 500 anything other than "ugly". (...and Overpriced, trendy carp, to boot).

Lets face it, it can't be any good if all the motoring magazines are in love with it.

"Your" ??? Don't you mean "You're" ??
It seems that you know even less about grammar than you do about good taste.
:-)
Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Zero
As you can only complain about the grammar, we will assume the stone age peasant comment is accepted.
Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Londoner
Tut! Tut! You don't know much about logic, either.

Just because I initially choose to correct you on your grammar does not imply acceptance or rejection of the sentiments behind your clumsily worded posting.

As it happens, I am happy to wear the label "peasant" with pride, in the manner that the French do.

However. you have no reason to label me as "Stone Age" just because i don't agree with your opinions, and am prepared to stand up to your bullying manner.

Tut! Tut!

I am often amazed at those who pretend to have perfect grammar and punctuation, berating those who they claim do not, and then going on to make errors.

"However. you have no reason to label me as "Stone Age" just because i don't agree with your opinions, and am prepared to stand up to your bullying manner."

If you are going to base your remarks on your superior grasp of written skills, please be beyond reproach.

Oh Dear! You are using the old trick of setting up a straw man, I see.

Where have I claimed to have perfect grammar and punctuation? I've merely pointed out your inadequacies, that's all, and you are not man enough to take it.

The trouble with you, Zero, is that you always want to be right and can't stand anybody's opinion but your own. This contrasts completely with my stated views (on this and other threads) that most things are a matter of personal opinion, and that two completely opposite viewpoints can be valid from the point of view of the individual owning them.

If this makes my views "Stone Age" then yours are positively prehistoric.

Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time. (To quote a good movie)

Well you see the point is, you cant criticise someone else's writing skills unless you are word perfect yourself. Its kinda foolish.

its rather like saying "that car is ugly but what do I know because I am blind"

Tosh. The principle that you are putting forward is:
"You cannot criticise anything unless you are perfect in that particular subject yourself"

So, the next time that we see a post by you which criticises someone's driving can we assume that this means that you believe that you are a perfect driver? (Well you must be perfect, otherwise by your own logic you couldn't be critical, could you).

Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Zero
No No no,

It means that if you see someone doing something stupid, that you yourself don't do, you can be critical.

I for example would not dare to criticise anyone who hits a bus. You, with your criticism of the written word example, would.

Now, how much deeper do you wish to dig this hole?
Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Londoner
I'll go on arguing with you all night if you want to. You amuse me.
Plus, you are the one who is in a hole, Pal. ;-)

I know this forum was against all the flashing stuff but that moving gif of blinking eyes and eating popcorn would have been useful at times.
Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Zero
No, everyone else will get bored. We'll just leave it with you being a self confessed peasant who is happy to criticise other peoples written English whilst admitting your own imperfections.

I am sure this deep character flaw does not affect your sense of taste or style

;)
Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Londoner
No, we'll just leave it with Zero being a self-righteous bore who gets annoyed when he can't get his own way and sulks off.

Come back another day and tell us all what it feels like to know everything and be perfect.

Right now I do have to turn in, because I have to take my car to the dealer for in the morning to have a serious electrical problem looked at - burning out headlight bulbs.
Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Zero
Ah! That explains why you appear to be in the dark.
Sorry, I didn't realise it was a physical impediment.

My appologies
Audi A1 - Ugly or what? - Londoner
Well you know what these BMW's are like - not as reliable as they are cracked up to be.
I've got a horrible feeling that this is going to cost serious money to fix - hence my dark mood today.

Did I mention that I didn't like the Audi A1? :)

Off on a tangent but I still think the Audi A4 B5 is still a handsome looker some 15 years after introduction.

Very handsome on the outside. Interior not bad - quite distinctive though.

No idea how it drives, but it looks the part.

It,s a heap in todays market place.

Automotive tu*d - looks like a car from the puppet show of the same name.

MGRV8 looks a better retro-effort.

Yes, I liked my 1999 B5, very handsome particularly after the mid-life facelift IMHO. Before the 'gaping grill' look was introduced by Audi too. Especially nice in Avant form (albeit not particularly capacious) I'd suggest.
