With the demise of Daihatsu over here a while back due to exhange rates, I made a point of asking at the Suzuki dealer how they cope with it - apparently they arent - all imports of japanese made cars have ceased and they are just selling off stock now as they are too expensive to sell here at current rates.
Luckily smaller models are built in Hungary so they arent affected but I wonder how many cars from Japan will be affected by this exchange rate issue - and is it affecting all their exports? How long will it last?

Is this the whole of Europe or just countries under EU control.

Not sure why Suzuki is affected. They import from Hungary and India.
Daihatsu had problem because they imported completely built units form Japan.

Same with Jap bikes - you can buy an excellent BMWS1000RR for about a grand cheaper than the equivalent rival Japanese bike. It used to be the other way around. My fully loaded RT was cheaper than the rival VFR1200 - a lot cheaper. Triumph and BMW have now got a distinct price (and in some cases a product) advantage !

I think exchange rates, but Euro to Sterling, have got to be the reason why VAG cars are generally on stupid leadtimes of 6-9mths. Why ship a car to the UK when they can make 20% more on one sold elsewhere in Europe?
I suppose the alternative though, is massive price increases.

I think some of teh 4x4 models are built in Japan, perhaps the Vitara is?
|
i thought spain seeing as theres always lots of them there like old uno's and panda's
|
As per Wikipedia, Grand Vitara is also made in Spain. So I think UK cars are sourced from there rather than Japan (a VIN check will confirm source plant though).

who put the information in wicki though
could be me see with knowledge wong

All I know is the salesman said there are certain models they just dont bother with anymore due to the exchange rate, no idea which they are, I didnt ask.
I know the Alto, Swift and SX4 are built in Hungary, not sure about the others, I presume the Splash is too.
|
The Swift. SX4 and Splash (together with it's sister the Vauxhall Aguila) are made in Hungary. The Alto, together with it's Nissan Pixo clone, is made in India. The Grand Vitara is built in Japan.

>> The Grand Vitara is built in Japan.
Interesting. We went looking to see a 3 door auto Vitara ~2 weeks ago for M but the salesman, very nice though he was, wasn't at all interested in making a sale. Seemed like "well i don't have one here, therefore i can never sell you one", which seemed a bit strange, but this explains it i guess.

Mazda does not seem to be affected ... yet all of the models it sells in the UK are made in Japan. Is it because of economies of scale in the UK market, I wonder ?
