Tax disc trivia - Runfer D'Hills
I've just got my new tax disc as the old one runs out on the 28th. Now, I've always just shoved the new one on as soon as I receive it although I suppose strictly speaking I should nip out on the stroke of midnight on the 28th / 1st to change it. Most probably though I'll put it on on Sunday sometime.

It occurs to me though that a real dilemma would face someone with no off street parking who went on holiday or something on the 15th of Feb and wasn't going to return until say the middle of March. They could have bought their tax online but left before it arrived or worse still left before they could buy it. Must be a provision for that surely?

Anyway, when do you slap your's on ?

Mine was left in various places around the house where I could be absolutely sure I would see it and remember to slap it on when the old one expired. So about ten days into the month.
Tax disc trivia - Perky Penguin
I would tend to put the new one into the regular disc holder, a few days before, and put the expiring one on the wind screen with sticky tape or BluTak so that it too is legally "On Display"
 Tax disc trivia - Redviper
Mine used to run out on 31st of decemeber
I have driven back on new years day to my house from my freinds, and the tax disc will still be in the drawer at home - changed it when I got home though.
Tax disc trivia - Perky Penguin
I think what OP is worried about, and in the circumstances you describe you might be, is being stopped for a vehicle check and being charged with "Failing to Display" a valid tax disc. The fact that ANPR cameras would know you were legally taxed a jobsworth could say that you weren't showing a valid disc.

Years ago, I used to go to Northern Ireland by car on business regularly. One time my car had been broken into the week before and stuff nicked. What I didn't notice at the time was the that the tax disc was one of the stolen items. Following week the car went thrrough a full police check at Belfast docks and even they didn't notice. It was about two months until I did frankly. Never had it challenged.
Tax disc trivia - Cliff Pope
A car is required to have in force:

Road Tax
Insurance
MOT

Why is it still considered necessary to display evidence of one of these, but not the other two?
 Tax disc trivia - retgwte
Current system is especially bad if you work abroad for long periods.
 Tax disc trivia - WillDeBeest
The disc is evidence of all three, since you can't get one without evidence, online or paper, of the other two.

Early in my car's life I bought one six-month disc, so that VED renewal is conveniently out of phase with the insurance and MoT cycle. I suppose that means my VED remains apparently valid for the months after the other two have expired, but since I must pass innumerable ANPR cameras and have never had the disc checked by an actual officer, this merely reflects (and justifies) the authorities' preferred means of enforcement.

In your presence... The parking wardens around here peer at tax discs a lot and will also take a note of the disc serial number when issuing a ticket.

It's evidence that all three were in place at one particular time. It is no evidence that the insurance and MOT have not since expired.
Tax disc trivia - Perky Penguin
Yes but one can get a 12 months tax disc by showing an MOT that is only valid for 2 days and the same might apply to insurance but I am not sure. I don't know how it works on line but if there is insurance and MOT, valid on the date of application a disc will be issued SFAIK. I've never had to try it.

I don't think I can afford the tax disc, it is £30.

My dad on the other hand really can't, guess who has paid for that again. Does seem mad though, a brand new car £30 a year, a 13 year old Fiesta £150 a year.
 Tax disc trivia - Dave_
>> Does seem mad though, a brand new car £30 a year, a 13 year old Fiesta £150 a year.

Try my Escort doing 8000 miles a year with a £210 tax disc, compared to a 7.5 tonner doing 50,000 miles a year and only paying £165. At least the Mondeo only rates £155 a year :)

I was turned away from a Post Office counter once for doing exactly that - they said, quite rightly, that for all they knew I could be taxing a wreck and intending to run it without an MoT for a year. This was in the days before ANPR and PNC-enabled patrol cars though.
 Tax disc trivia - Iffy
...one can get a 12 months tax disc by showing an MOT that is only valid for 2 days...

I thought the MoT had to be valid for a specified length of time, don't think it's long, maybe a month.

Tax disc trivia - Hard Cheese

I usually have old and new both displayed for about a month, a couple of weeks before and after the renewal.

 Tax disc trivia - Bromptonaut
AFAIK MoT & insurance have to be in place on the date the disc comes into effect. This will be the later of the first day of the new tax period (where the disc is bought in advance) or the date of purchase for those dallying with the supposed 14 day 'grace period'
 Tax disc trivia - commerdriver
In recent years I have always put the new disc into the holder whenever I receive it, I am running the bmw now with a disc expiring 29/2/12.
Continuous licensing means that you cannot get a tax disc today starting on Tuesday 1st March unless you already have a valid one expiring on Monday.

Special provision is made for dealers pre taxing cars at a DVLA office
 Tax disc trivia - VxFan
>> In recent years I have always put the new disc into the holder whenever I receive it

Ditto. The date on it is an expiry date. There isn't a start date.

When someone buys a new car in the middle of the month it's given a tax disc that covers the next 12 months and 'x' days. The customer doesn't wait until the 1st of the month to start displaying it. It's displayed from the moment he leaves the forecourt.

ditto Diito.

The superficial "long distance" check of a tax disc is its colour.

I fit my new one when I receive it, the old one is in the glovebox until the next clear out.
Tax disc trivia - Armel Coussine
Because of a long, confused housemove with several interim addresses, when I renewed my disc on line the new one didn't turn up, or got lost somewhere. In a couple of months without the new disc on display I didn't get a single pull. I realised this was because when an out of date disc is seen now it is immediately checked on the DVLA database. When it turns out that money has been paid and the new disc issued, it is assumed I think, in commonsense fashion, that there has been some hitch and there's no real offence being committed except 'failure to display'.

It might save money, and improve visibility through windscreens, if the requirement to display a tax disc were dropped and the virtual version relied on. Cars would look a bit odd for a while but we would soon get used to it, and to constant ANPR surveillance.

I wouldn't want the DVLA to lay off a lot of people though. In my experience the DVLA, face to face or on the phone, is by far the sunniest and most agreeable government agency. Makes you happy to conduct a successful bureaucratic manoeuvre with a charming feminine Welsh accent over the phone and improves the rest of the day. Things like that matter.

 Tax disc trivia - CGNorwich
Well technically you shouldn't

"If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from. "

Per DVLA website
 Tax disc trivia - Iffy
...The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from...

Ah, so there is a start date.

Always put mine on the week before, which is obviously incorrect.

 Tax disc trivia - hawkeye
Out of sheer bloody-mindedness I have kept the chrome-plated vacuum tax disc holder that Mum gave me in 1971 for my first car. It's not in bad shape but of course it drops off 2 or 3 times a year; I'm used to scooping it up as it rolls across the dash on the next left-hander. When I got the C8, I discovered that a greedy air vent had eaten the disc as the holder rolled towards me. Having faith in the ANPR system, I tucked the holder away in the glovebox and no-one said a word for months until the next renewal. 2007 IIRC. Now the holder has a blob of Blu-tak to stop the disc escaping.

Is that trivial enough for you?

It's on the car already.

...Strange about the Prius tax disc...

One of the arguments for not abolishing road tax in favour of extra fuel duty is a register of vehicles would still need to be kept.

That would cost money, and it doesn't cost so much more to collect some money from us along the way.

taxed a car this morning for a customer
broke my heart to pay a full months tax for 2 days left but they needed wheels and i wasnee paying

Just noticed it's a leap year next year. Tax runs out on the 29th Feb 2012. Appropos of nothing really other than the bargain nature of this disc as a result.
 Tax disc trivia - Zero
Dont tax it, isnt feb 29th 2012 the end of the world?
Tax disc trivia - Runfer D'Hills
Oh, and another thing. I have a dislike of those big tax disc holders which advertise the selling dealer. Have to replace them with simple round ones. Also have to remove the dealer stickers from back windows too. Scruffy things. Knackered the top two stripes on "her" heated window doing it though... I denied all knowledge of that of course. First time that has ever happened to me. Fairly irritating.
 Tax disc trivia - Iffy
...First time that has ever happened to me. Fairly irritating...

The dealer sticker on the CC3 was on the outside of the rear window, thereby making removal a relatively risk-free process.

People avoid RFL - many reasons - no insurance, no Mot but many it is ££s for many. Chances of being caught are low if you park off-road at home and work!

Transfer RFL money to petrol - everybody then pays because you have to buy fuel and it is cheap to collect from the dozen or so Big Oil Companies.

.
Charge £10/£20 per year for Road Verification Certificate which checks MoT, Insurance at Post Office. Fine for avoiding Road Verification - make it £100/£200. Small Fee BIG FINES >> ...

"If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires."

Has anyone, um er, tried that paint stuff which joins up broken rear screen heater elements?

Yes, a few light years ago. Use two strips of tape to mask each side of the damaged element and apply two or three coats of the conductive paint before removing the tape. It worked for me.

>> I know its an Alzheimers week (being passed on a roundabout and all) but please don't go all pedantic on us.

Come come my dear fellow. 'All pedantic' is about making people feel silly over minor matters of punctuation, spelling and grammar. I don't go in for that.

This is a matter of essential basic concepts and their commonly-used terminology. I was doing you a favour I thought.

Still, 'there's none so blind as them what will not see' or whatever the tiresome proverb is.

I renewed the car tax for daughter's car this month (for 1st March) online and was surprised I was able to do that, as her insurance renewal date is the same day and it hadn't been renewed at that point. The car had already been re-MOT'd.

I'm sure it hasn't allowed this in the past, but the disk has arrived now.

We tried to tax Bertha yesterday ready for March 1st and it would only allow it to run from February 1st.

Would that be because she is currently SORN?

Looks like we'll have to do it at 3am tomorrow!
