I have seen reports on some forums of low (ish) mileage Euro 4 & 5 spec diesel engines from various manufacturers suffering from fouled injectors due to the extremely tight clearances used to meet the spec. The symptoms seem to be white /grey smoke on cold starts, rough running, and increased fuel consumption. Does anyone have experience of this?

Yes. At about a year old our 2008 Verso with the 2.2 140 engine and no DPF started doing just that. No clues what brought it on but the solution was a new set of injectors, all smoothly handled under warranty; only real hardship was two days with a Yaris.

I posted some comments at the time (Easter 2009) on the HJ site. Two years on, we've had no further problems.

No, but I'll keep an eye open.

Don't want that to happen outside warranty in a year's time.

Most seem to be fixed with a dose of injector cleaner, Some of the 2010 on KIA Ceed's fitted with the U2 engine have had this problem. A dose of Millers fixed mine. :-)

Nothing on mine, either... Though at about 14k pa I'm not sure if I'm low(ish) mileage or not!

Just for completeness, our problem occurred at about ten months and 9,500 miles, and it was getting a fast 170-mile motorway trip most weeks, so I don't think lack of exercise was a factor; the dealer certainly didn't suggest so. Perhaps 'low mileage' in the OP means 'early in its life'.

Definitely nothing then!

By low mileage I mean that some cars have been affected below 5,000 miles, been rejected and replaced. I don't think anyone considered injector fouling at that mileage and as it was winter blamed glow plugs but could not find a fault.

An internet search for "Diesel injector fouling" shows that it is an increasing problem with new spec diesels.
