Sounds like it threw the n/s track, which would cause it to veer off the road.

Those things don't hang about; back in the day, I was working on the Striker (guided missile) variant, in those days they had the 4.2 Jaguar engine in them; a well-tuned (and of course ungoverned) one was good for over 70 mph, scary on tracks, trust me!

Distributors were a PITA to work on, because the engine was "back to front" and they still had points ignition.
