M4 Berkshire: blue lights - WillDeBeest
Driving to work this morning, eastwards along the M4 past Slough, I passed what seemed like dozens of unmarked vehicles heading west with blue lights on. I know the occasional visiting dignitary goes that way to Windsor, but these seemed too widely spaced to be escorts. Any clues?

I think 5Live were reporting some kind of to do around junction 8/9 this morning. I wasn't listening that carefully as I only cross the M4 these days rather than travel it, but I expect it's some kind of pile up or other.

I saw a similar thing on the M42/M6 a while back - I was going North and car after car, and a couple of vans too, passed me heading South over a period of 20-30mins. All had blue lights in the windscreen and sirens. The cars all looked pretty ordinary and I got a good look at one of vans due to traffic and it was an oldish VW with the driver casually dressed.

Have many times seen similar 'ordinary' cars with blue 'Kojak' lights and alternating headlights (and some with blue lights in the grille) between Swindon and Chippenham on the M4. Having seen retained firemen in a small Essex town rushing to the station, I presumed that the M4 were also fireman (but if Chippenham needed assistance, surely a fire engine would attend from Swindon?)

Could it be something to do with the "works unit only" junction between J12 and 13 and Highgrove house?

They do some quiet fancy stuff depending on the size of the bigwig. Seen unmarked Range Rover being severely tailgated (and I mean very close, fag paper thin gap) at high speed by unmarked Royal Protection boys - no other outriders. I think that was Charley on his way to Highgrove. Once came off the M4 onto the A329 and somehow managed to get between Diana and the boys (on their way back to school) and their protection car (I was soon made aware that I oughtn't have done that).

But when Liz is on the move, or visiting dignitaries, they often get the full set of rolling roadblocks behind, traffic prevented from joining at junctions by outriders and an empty three lane motorway to navigate. Used to also see the Royal cars in London, around Victoria, where a copper on each set of lights stopped the traffic just in time to enable a trouble fee passage.
