Weekend in Ghent - Perky Penguin
Just back from a weekend in Ghent. Usual good service both ways with Eurotunnel. Petrol cheaper in France than UK, by up to 10p a litre at supermarkets, but usually needing an acceptable credit or debit card to pay, supermarket pumps are unattended 7 days a week.

A few speed cameras, no visible police presence and some quite horrendous potholes on the motorways. One major hold up was two motorways merging, 2 lanes into 3 and then the 3 merging into 1, but at least it was for pot hole repairs!

Ghent was fine, not as scenic as Brugges but the centre is very pleasant. Very helpful tourist office and plenty of good eating, and chocolate shops of course.

We stayed out of town, 20 minute walk to the South, good B&B @ 200 euros for 3 nights and on-street parking for 4 euros/24 hours. The B&B can be found by Googling for "Garden in the City"

Any other queries feel free to contact me thru email in my profile.

I love Ghent.

Took 46 people there last year (coach trip). Did you try the bar with 300 beers? Or the restaurant (Amadeus) which is like eating in a country house library where you get ribs which keep coming until you beg them to stop? Nothing else on the menu except steak or prawns for the ladies!

Did you see the Van Eyck painting 'The Mystic Lamb' behind the high altar in the cathedral? Worth the trip on its own almost...

Go to Ghent in the last week of July

The whole City shuts down for an 8-10 day festival (depending on the calender).

Most tourist attractions stay open but there is loads of entertainment and extras on the streets ranging from high to low brow and it generally goes on until at least 3am, if you want to go on all night there is a smaller square off the main market square where the funfair is where the "all nighters" go.

Recommended.

As always
