All around 07/57 plate with around 50k on. All around the same price.
Alfa 159 2.4JTDm Lusso
Honda Accord 2.2CDTi Sport
Mazda 6 2.0D TS2
Jaguar X-Type 2.0D S
All have leather and a fair amount of toys. I'm leaning toward the Alfa but also the Accord for reliability.
What do you thunk?

Have you test driven any of them?

My spontaneous reaction says Honda. Would also want a look at the Mazda for comparison. But I guess a lot comes down to close scrutiny of each car, it's colour and condition, what the seller is like, location of dealerships, ...etc.
|
Alfa and Honda, yes. The other two are just whims as I quite like the look of them.
|
Heart says Alfa, head says Honda. The decision you make is based on enjoyment versus cost of ownership/reliability. How did you find the Honda in terms of driving? I'm looking to buy one (petrol) myself this year. What was it like in terms of comfort, ease of driving, road noise (one criticism that's often mentioned), and how did it compare with the Alfa?

The 159 isn't in that fabulous metallic red with the rich brown leather interior, is it? I know that God intended me to drive something sensible and Swedish, but when the Devil perches on my shoulder and whispers in my ear, it's a 159 like that that he waves in front of my eyes.
|
All my customers who have X-Types love them. Thats all I know.
|
Mazda cleared up their DPF mess yet? I wouldn't.
I'd be going Honda for quality and durability, though the Jag's interiors in the right colour could be tempting.
Alfa only if it's a real beauty, colour, spec etc, then it's heart over head.
|
Could you get a 2.2 X-Type?
|

Well if this is the original Mazda6 on a 57 plate (mine is) then it will be like mine. My oil level on the Mazda6 is about 1" above full. I'll probably arrange an oil change in the next week or so - not me that will pay for it though.

64 thousand dollar question RTJ, would you buy it or recommend anyone doing so at end of lease/out of warranty.
|
For my car then it's never gone anywhere near X and is serviced on time. But I won't by buying it so it will go to auction in October I guess. But lease companies ask silly prices for their old cars.
Another reason for not buying it and why the car might get struck off the list... other problems I have had:
1. Drivers door lock would remain deadlocked when car opened - known problem. Lock replaced.... someone other than Mazda paid because outside of warranty.
2. DPF/oil level problem is well known
3. Auto windscreen wipers the last week are now playing up - when it's light rain they go too fast and when it's heavy rain they can be too slow. There is no manual intermittent.
4. Hatchback hydraulic lifts were failing and made worse in the very cold weather. The hatch would not stay open at all.
All sorted apart from the DPF (needs to be kept an eye on) and the new problem with windscreen wipers.
Someone somewhere will wonder why this car was on a 4 year lease ;-) It's got 9 months to run. All our cars now come from another lease company and are 3 years... mine was one of the last by a few days on the old deal.

On an 07 plate? Mine finally failed last week and I had to replace them - after 13 years :)

Alfa every time for me. Looks a whole lot better with the TI pack though not sure if they were around in 07. The 2.4 is quick, has a great 5 cylinder sound but dont expect it to be brilliant economy wise. Also if it is an 07 there are plenty of Alfa independant specialists around now (and no, not because you will need them all the time ha!)
|
Well I would go for the Honda Accord on the basis of reliability - I have the 2,4 EX and have never regretted the decision......
|
I saw a Lexus IS220d today. They're Luvverly.
|
Really? I've not tried one but it's powered by a version of the unremarkable diesel engine found in our Toyota Verso - a version that, among contributors to the Toyota owners' forum anyway, has a reputation for heavy fuel consumption. (Our 140 is no paragon of parsimony itself.) HJ is a fan of the T180 engine in the Avensis but I tried it in both that and the Verso and was underwhelmed.
It may be a different matter in the Lexus, of course, but I don't think it's gained a fifth cylinder.

Alfa's are lovley but reliability can be questionable, dealerships can be just as challenging !
Mazda 6 2.0 ltr diesel fraught with injection issue's
Honda can be great, reliability not what it used to be but still , parts can be expensive if it goes wrong, ie ABS, common issue with Honda , but all cars have their quirks.
X-type great , especially 2.2, very refined and quiet engine & huge grunt compared to 2 ltr and more economical. Some have suffered EGR valve issues but not over expensive as some cars & plenty of indy's that can deal with them now.
