Was in Tesco yesterday. The pump now offers me their new Momentum99, which I ignored. Small print said it has been tested in a statistically hugely significant eight cars. Wow.
Anyway, report is here.
www.tesco.com/Momentum99/productBenefits.asp
I didn't want to pay the extra because I've never found super unleaded gives an improvement commensurate with the extra price.
Anybody tried this stuff? It's snake oil isn't it. Isn't it.

I just attempted to post this comment;
''Its a total waste of money.
tested on 8 EIGHT cars.... get real!!!!!!;;
I get this 'Your comment must be approved by a moderator before appearing here. '
I bet it NEVER appears!

Oh, so another attempt at V-Power by Tesco, then. Why is this going to sell any better than that Greenergy 99 RON stuff they did about 4-5 years ago?
Edited to add: personal experience of using super UL is that it has no effect whatsoever on consumption, but does give a slightly better response in mid-rev range and smoother running. Plus on the Bandit it's a pretty good preventative against carb icing.

It's the same fuel under a new brand name I understand.
Tesco's 99 RON fuel - I use it in my Jetta Sports 170 - is known for having excellent engine clearning ability. It's certainly a smoother engine using it than using, say, Texaco 97 RON. Also see:

Ah, interesting. Thanks for that. Did use the Tesco product in my old Civic and it was fine.
A lot of the VW Group FSI and TFSI engines seem to need super for best results - certainly I'd do that if I had one - but it would be interesting to know how many owners bother.
|
If it's 99 RON that's good. The 1200RT insists on having 98RON and I have considered thos Tesco stuff in mine...just can't bring myself to ! :-)
|
With average standard petrol at 127.9p at my local Tesco, a good 2p a litre dearer than my other local supermarkets and a penny dearer than the local Shell half mile down the road, and people struggling to fill the tanks as it is a cracking time to introduce a 'premium' petrol, not!
Think I may, just, be able to resist the temptation to give them even more of my hard-earned.......
|
>>..as it is a cracking time to introduce a 'premium' petrol, not!>>
It's been on sale under its re-branded name of Momentum for at least two or three months, long before the recent price rises, and first went on sale about four years ago.
My VW TSi engine runs very nicely on it thank you and so did the 1.6 petrol Bora when I occasionally put some in with the regular to help keep the engine clean.

That works for me on the Sportster, Paul.

I suppose those who supply fuel to the minority who use petrol need all the marketing waffle they can get away with. :-)
|
I wouldn't say Petrol users were a minority! I am guessing there was a bit of sarcasm which was lost on me :).
Too tired and stressed.
Either way it is the worse possible time to try and sell premium rate fuel, if anything they should be marketing more spend £50 in store get a £5 of the fuel sort of detals.

Why not, more than 50% of new cars sold are diesel powered. Add the vans, lorries, busses, and assorted other diesel users and petrol is a minority fuel in Europe, A different story in the USA though.

Are they prone to icing too, then? Carburetted Bandits are absolute swine for it by all accounts, although mine has [touches wood] never done it.
Plus my mechanic says that my carb jets are some of the cleanest he's ever seen, so must be doing something right with that.
|
I wouldn't put it in my tank.
Google it and season to taste with "mmt ford filetype:PDF", try "mmt toxic" for a giggle too. "Saab mmt" has some pictures.
It's undeniable that taking a cheaper base stock and loading it with cheap (& harmful in at least concentrated form) mmt as an octane enhancer is a much cheaper way to get super petrol on the forecourt, but is it better to polish a turd or pay the premium and start out with a better refined base stock (even with all the extra waste and expense that entails, I don't think it justifies the illegal in many countries MMT).
|
I'll stick to Shell then...thanks Skoda.

>> Are they prone to icing too, then?
Many Harleys are; unfortunate side-effect of a single carburettor mounted centrally on an in-line V-twin engine.
The MoCo sell a special fuel additive (isopropyl) to overcome the problem, although it's available more cheaply from chemists, you can get it on e-bay as well. Add at 100;1 strength.

Well surprise, surprise.
ST, you lose your bet!

Absolute shysters!
Take 8 cars, starting in winter, ending in summer (with at least 1500miles on odo so they are 'run in')
Run 3 tanks of TESCO 95 - dyno test and work out MPG.
Run 3 tanks of TESCO 99 - dyno test and work out MPG.
Then see up a 25% difference in economy in a regular non-turbo car.
Lies, damned lies, and statistics indeed.
Every single test that I've seen independently of UL vs SUL has at best shown a 1-2% improvement in consumption, occasionally a 3-4% BHP improvement on turbo'd cars, and occasionally a drop in MPG.
Trading Standards or ASA should be looking at this drivel.

Personally I would rather stick Millers in the tank rather than give Tesco any of my money

Another knocking attack on a successful UK business?

Evo did a test with some of their long termers on Optimax (now V-Power), which showed some pretty positive results, although by the nature of their magazine, these were high specific output engines, either high revving naturally aspirated or turbocharged. I would expect such engines to benefit much more from high octane fuel than a typical repmobile / family runabout lump.
They tested over three tankfuls on each fuel, including regular commutes, and a set amount of track work. The cars were also dynoed at the end of the three tankfuls of each fuel. Power and economy were both improved by between 5 and 10% depending on the car.
One very interesting aspect of the test was a borescope examination of the combustion chambers and piston crowns before and after the Optimax. You didn't need to be an engineer to spot the difference.
I wonder how the Tesco brew compares.
|
Yes, they tested fuels in issues 44 and 87. Most gains in the mid-range it seems. Even cooking Jazz engines (wife has a dSI) have a 10.8:1 compression ratio. Quite noticeable if she's bought 95 octane. Feels like a dragging brake.
|
I experimented briefly with my Volvo S60 2.0T. Definitely perkier, and a consistent 3 mpg improvement measured over several tankfuls, but on balance I decided it wasn't worth the fiver extra per tank.
I haven't tried it with the 1.8T engine in the Golf, but I wouldn't expect a significant change either. It has a relatively high compression ratio for a turbocharged engine, but like the Volvo engine, it is quite gently tuned/mapped.

Just ask Zero with his red stained spark plugs :-)

I think my car ran worse on it than normal unleaded. Probably gone stale as they were selling so little of it.
|
when i had my tvr griffith 500 it would only run properly on super unleaded.
on a dyno it produced 375hp on super and on normal it would misfire badly.
|
I've got my wooden spoon out for stirring up old discussions purposes.
How about...acetone...
|
i have several litres of acetone in the shed for an ongoing grp project.
tempting to see if it makes a difference in something like an old knackered 6hp 4st outboard i have
