I don't have any experience of them, but I'm aware they usually have a sticker somewhere advising a 50mph limit. Are there any legislative limits on their use - I can't find anything in the highway code ?

The Devil's own invention.
Problems with space savers...
1) where do you put the knackered wheel? Space saver bay is too small
2) what if you are out in the sticks? Not a problem for you europeans, but what if I'm 600kms from home on a sunday? at 80km/h = 8 hrs later...
3) Hi-inflation - they need some serious air pressure. which many local garage pumps can't reach.
For cars with a space-saver, I advise buying a steel wheel of the right size, putting on a standard size tyre, and building up the boot floor with polystyrene.

The boot of my Vectra-C will accommodate a full sized spare. The Estate and Signum won't though, IIRC.

Vectra estate with a puncture? Probably topples the balance in favour of torching it and replacing it with something else?
;-P
Catty comments from a Skoda owner. Who'd have thunk it.

I put one of my winter wheels set in during the summer as a spare - although the spare wheel bay under the boot floor won't quite take a 17" summer wheel, the winter ones at 16" and narrower section are fine.

But infinitely better than a run-flat or a can of gunk.

My last car had a space saver spare and I found that it had a slightly smaller outside diameter which caused the traction control to intermittently cut in. Fortunately I could disable the traction control.

Was that on a front wheel drive L'es ? My car book says don't use it on the front.

100% Old navy - NEVER on the front, whether FWD or RWD.
