I'd say that it would be a staid motor to put it mildly, being in essence fifteen years out of date when it was made: cart-sprung at both ends and under-engined fortunately, with a somewhat church-like interior. Come to think of it I associate Wolseleys of that vintage with the clergy. But a twelve or fourteen, which that car is, is just for a vicar, not a bishop. A twenty or twenty-five with a large 6 cylinder engine would be a lot nicer.

One of the concessions we poorer folk, who have to run older cars, have to make is to fit windscreen washers. You are exempt if the screen opens. I have a neat BL one on the bulkhead of my car, fitted next to a small pump. All the wiring is done in braided cable and the coloured spade connectors are covered in black heat shrink. A bakelite starter button on the dash makes it squirt. In the case of this Wuzzley, I think he's fitted the bottle as part of a sealed circuit cooling system.....a recommended modification. I haven't had the need to do this though. It does look a nice car, it's got a lovely patina of long tern care, both inside and out. A car to be gently enjoyed and cherished. Ted

Plug leads and caps don't match, but I imagine a suitably original looking set could be found. I agree the bottle is an expansion tank for the cooling system. Is that a little brass tap I see on the inlet manifold? Does it have a water jacket?

Don't think the bottle is an expansion, if you look under the steady bar there is the same green pipe going towards the bulkhead. The pipe n/s top of radiator might be the overflow. Agree a very nice car, nicely used and not pampered.

...To drain the surplus petrol when it's flooded?...But it drains straight on to the exhaust manifold!... I still reckon it's a water-heated inlet manifold. The tap looks like a water rather than a fuel one, and it would seem unlikely for it to drain fuel onto the exhaust manifold. Not sure why a drain tap is needed in that location - I've seen them lower down on engine blocks.

Use a decent picture blower upper like you get on screen on opera and you can see quite clearly its a non heated inlet manifold :-) The art is to not turn the tap when car running which you wouldnt anyway as surplus petrol would already be gone. In 1947 what material would you use for this tap on what is a weird set up? remember plastic would melt and there was no butter because it was still on ration,brass to me seems the ideal medium and remember you could whittle one in the evening hours out of an old standard lamp ;-) Last edited by: Bellboy on Wed 5 Jan 11 at 14:51

From Wiki: SU Carburetters .......... usually of the sidedraught type but downdraught variants were used on some pre-war cars. I think it's a drain cock for a flooded engine. The only time it's likely to be used is when starting from cold and then it wouldn't matter if it drained onto the exhaust.

Perhaps there is something missing, or the thing has been assembled incorrectly. An SU carburettor is unlikely to function normally in this orientation - for a start, oil would leak out of the dashpot. Hm. Date of first registration: 29 12 1978. Year made: 1947. Edit: SP. Apart from the oil damper problem, the SU Piston originally relied on gravity to keep the piston 'down'. The additional piston return spring IIRC was first fitted in the 1950s in Morris Minors. Must make for interesting mixture changes when cornering hard. I can only conclude that some body has changed the the carb for a more modern one at some point. Also the float chamber would need reorienting to keep it vertical.

I too had a GTE 16v in white new in 1989, one of the very first & my goodness it was quick. fantatsic engine, so much guts, when i tracked it with a gold GTI I was suprised how the golf used to lift a wheel off the ground round a corner. The GTE 16V was a lot heavier than the 8v Astra as the floor was strenghend to take the power. dash board used to rattle but apart from that it was a real boy racers car! many youngsters were killed pinching them! The early ones were the quickets & mine would red line in top with an indicated 152 so about 144ish we calculated. Excellent on fuel as well.

I seem to recall the early models were 156 bhp and the later ones 150. The early engines had Cosworth cast heads which were reported to flow better than the outsourced items of the later units. The Coscast engines are still very sought after today. A friend had an F plater (early engine) which had over 100k on the clock, and was not a particularly tidy or cared for example, but I remember the acceleration was grin inducing. It sounded fantastic as well, with a trademark deep rasp from the tailpipes and a lovely growl at the top end. I also remember it had grunt everywhere in the rev range too, which was most unusual for a multivalve engine of this era. We saw an indicated 142 mph with a set of B&Q roof bars attached ;-) What Car tested an early car, and it put in some blistering times. 0-60 in 6.9 seconds and they crowed several times that it had the measure of an XJS V12 in many of the in gear incremental tests. Figures actually that would still make it competitive with many of the turbocharged 200+ bhp hot hatches of today. Years ahead of its time. That is cos Vauxhall still put in the same standard door locks and ignition that they fitted to Novas etc that could be worked easier with a screwdriver than it could a key!

Mine was absolutley blistering & infact two of my friends bought them after driving mine but theirs were no where near as quick. Somewhere I had a report on a 24 hr endurance test at Millbrook & the car averaged over 137mph over the complete 24hrs including stops !! The guy that bought mine crashed it 6 weeks later ! he got carried away overtaking. I have to say they were balistic but at the time the guys in the pub only gave the XR3i any credit & used to laugh at me having an Astra, if only they knew. One of the best hot hatches for grunt eh I then bought 24vGsi Carlton manual boy oh boy, kept it 7 years & still miss it 10 years on

A normally aspirated 16V engine was an alternative weapon of choice to slot into an Escort shell by the rally boys. Cheaper to tune and more reliable.

Good couple of spots GB. My last CX was that age but a nicer looking 2400 Pallas in silver. Perhaps a bit like the W124 I've just collected this CX 2000 Super isn't the most exciting model in the range. I know of the guy selling it, he'll be very close to pda Pat. The DS is just a little earlier than my own DS21 Pallas. Mine was white too with a very similar red/white interior. Being later if had the faired in headlamps with the steering inner lamps which I prefer to the bug look of the DS19. I don't think I'd bother to have a CX again but as I said in the Mercedes thread a DS would still appeal.

Soupytwist perhaps you only scanned my post above but I mentioned I knew of the CX seller... he's only 15mins from me. However I've had 3 CXs before and wouldn't have another. Not because I don't like them but there are substantial maintenance issues now in finding some parts and the time/expense in doing things like changing a clutch. You might say the DS would have similar issues and that's true... but they are just that bit more... well DS like. Actually that CX bears comparison with the Mercedes W124 I'm playing with at the moment. Both lower range models of luxury cars from broadly the same era... similar condition (if you accept the CX description) with similar excellent back stories/history. ...I could live with this... The bidding on the DS - linked by gb - has ended, £20,100 reserve not met. Seems an awful lot of money to me. I think the CX in the other link is not badly priced at £2,995 - I was expecting it to be a bit more. Both cars are very hard to value.

There was an automatic Datsun Laurel knocking about on the farm-based industrial park where I had a job many, many moons ago. It was a sort of site taxi, used by any of the units' occupants to get from one area of the farm to another. ISTR it had very light power steering with absolutely no feel to it at all.

i ran a laurel for a fair while it had rotted out where the chassis meets the bulkhead (they all did) i paid £50 for mine with a private plate sold it to a pub landlord as he could put barrels in it easily apparently it was a very nice car,the engines were apparently used in trucks in japan love the mazda too

Dont much like the worn seat, but the rest looks ok. Could change the seat I expect or even the whole interior if you couldnt get a matching seat. Cant say as I buy the mileage though, maybe 135k, that would be closer to what Im looking at, but then the rest looks plausible. I wouldnt myself, rather have one with more miles tbh.

ive driven a few of these and it drives like nothing else. exceptionaly well built and appointed it feels like its hewn from granite and is supremely comfortable and i dont think it looks to naff or ostentatios either. and they are pretty quick for their size and if you use the power it can return 5mpg or about 12 around town and 19ish on a good run.

There are quite a lot of cars I'd like to drive in an environment which suited them. So a convertible Rolls in the dead of a summer's night on the Riviera does appeal, just as a Hummer in an Amercan desert would or a Pagani Zonda on an empty autobahn. Aye, I wouldn't mind changing that rally spec one back to original factory road spec. Never mind the rust, I'm not going to live forever either. The Sud 1.5ti I used to drive in 1987/88 remains my favourite driving experience of all time.

I thought that from first glance (at the radiator grille) but it's a 1.3 - the 1.8TC were pretty quick in a straight line, not so good on bends though.
