If the roads are really filthy, what's the chance of emptying the washer bottle in 150 miles?

I have done this with the FocuST though the headlight washers dont help, it would be nice to be able to turn them off when running with headlights on in daylight though they are automatically on with Xenon lights.

I've often wondered why more cars don't have the option. I had a Merc s211 a few years ago that worked the other way round though - it had a seperate button for operating the headlamp washers, but as you say the norm is for them to operate every 3/4/5th 'squirt' of the washers which can empty the reservoir remarkably quickly!!

It's the same setup as the Volvo system, a quick splash on the windscreen does not activate the headlight washers.
After the Volvo has cleaned the headlights, the headlight washers do not work again for another ten minutes no matter how many times you clean the windscreen.
The headlight washers also deactivate when the bottle is getting low to save screen wash for the windscreen.

If the washer bottle or nozzles are frozen up, then there's no chance of emptying it.

The Escort used about 1 1/2 litres of washer fluid on a 260-mile round trip a couple of days ago, mostly motorway with filthy lorry spray fully dirtying the windscreen every couple of miles or so. Heated nozzles and neat screenwash concentrate meant they kept working too :)

My cousin has just bought a Focus with headlamp washers, he says he's stopped squirting the screen because it uses the whole bottle up in no time.

My Mazda 6 seems to have a secret back up reservoir. I am almost paranoid about ensuring that I don't run out of screen wash and several times during the current weather conditions I have thought that I must have been right down to the dregs, only to find when I topped up that there was ample solution remaining for another week or more. Very reassuring.

If you feel the bottle has emptied too quickly I felt the same with my Focus to the extent I thought the bottle had sprung a leak.

I accessed the bottle and gave it a good check over and it was ok.

For some reason although it seemed to hold a good quantity of fluid it emptied at an alarming rate.

I'm frugal with the washer bottle contents, habit from 35 years of working for haulage companies some of which have believed plain water doesn't freeze or accidents are cheaper than screenwash...who knows?
Volvo FL's headlamp washers could empty a 2 gallon bottle in a day, i always disconnected the electric pump every service they'd reconnect it.

Keep a spray bottle of water (and squeegee) handy and use that when stationary, two minutes sees the salt film gone from all windows and lights.
Useful to keep a washing up liquid sqeezy type bottle full of water in the door pocket too, stopping for a moment at a junction or mimsing in slow moving traffic a quick blast out the drivers window will do the business.

I'm so frugal with the washer bottle in the X3 that all the soapy stuff has (seemingly) part-solidified over the course of a year and has blocked the pipes :-(

Had 2 unsuccessful attempts to unblock 'em myself. Guess I have to pay the garage to disassemble in the New Year :-(

With the Golf if you have headlight washers then the washer bottle is increased from 3 litres to 5 litres, but even so I seem to get through quite a lot especially on motorway journeys down to the coast with all of the ferry bound HGV's.
