Manufacturer spec oils. - Old Navy
There is an interesting feature on the latest spec engine oils in the December edition of Car Mechanics magazine. Including the fact that manufacturer spec oils have trace chemicals in them for identification. Warranty claim anyone?

Are CM suggesting that the dealers specific oil might have some sort of indentifyer, or different grades of all makes.

Nothing was mentioned about my overspecced oil (which the dealer puts in for me) when out of warranty goodwill injector replacements were completed a few weeks ago.

Can't see there being an issue unless someone tries going below spec.

I know the major Oil Makers put in a trace ( A DNA if you like) so they can tell counterfeit products

Its very easy to buy cheap oil in bulk and reproduce packaging.

I think it is more a case of the manufacturer checking the oils "DNA" if there is an engine warranty or goodwill claim.

Aren't Car Mechanics the same guys who advocated the Water-electrolysis "HHO" crap to improve vehicle efficiency ?

I think the 'DNA' tracing is to prevent counterfeiting and comes from the Oil manufacturer not the car maker. There is nothing wrong with using other brands of oil as long as they are 'in-spec'.

A used oil analysis is well within the abilities of a car maker hell-bent on trying to dodge engine damage claims. Oil 'DNA' has hee-haw to do with it.

CM have not said anything about counterfeiting, or oil producer tracers in oil. They are saying that different car manufacturer specific oils have the trace, so BMW specific 5/30 oil will have a different trace than Vauxhall specific 5/30 for example. Also that this will (or is) causing problems for independent repairers who service many makes of car, and in the past would have had one bulk oil tank.

But BMW don't make oil, or sell BMW oil, or brand oil

Some manufacturers do sell their own label oil.

But... most dealers use a big name oil (Mobil, Shell etc) in the pumps...
The only time warranty would be an issue is if the wrong spec oil was used.
These days with mechanical engine problems, a sample of oil is often sent away to be checked by the factory.

Dear confused southern resident,

Car manufacturers "approve" oils of particular specifications for their cars.

Could this spec include a trace chemical?

Yes it does, - its an anti counterfeit trace. It says "I am Shell 15W5 fully synth batch xxx.xxx"

VAG do it for oils approved to their specs.

I've never heard of it for other manufacturer approvals, such as MB, BMW etc.

At 13 quid a litre, it had traces of gold in it.

CM mag don't seem to have all that much journalistic integrity, but it's only thinly veiled most of the time, especially in the used car review section they do, buyers guide? I can't remember what they call it.
