The front tyres on the S-Max were pretty worn (down to about 3mm) so I did a trawl of prices and found that my local independent had some Kuhmos he recommended and did me a deal on all four. The backs weren't so bad, but the car has been sliding all over the place these last couple of weeks.
Wow. Even though they are not winter tyres, the difference in grip is significant. The traction control is working less often, the car turns with more certainty and the response of the wheels to steering inputs is more positive.
I wonder what winter tyres would feel like in similar circumstances?
|
My local tyre place of choice deals with Kuhmo, so it's usually them I stick on.
Yes, very grippy. They seem to be quite a soft compound, so may explain the good winter traction. They don't last long though.

I've got newish cheap tyres on the Scudo. No problem at all in the snow.

Just put Vredestein Quatrac 3 tyres onto my Panda Cross 4x4.
They're described as all season but rated as a snow tyre.
Driving on snow-covered roads in Northumbria and Cumbria yesterday, happy to cruise at 60 mph on snow.

Crikey! - you could drive up Scafell Pike the hard way with that combo.

Lightweight 4x4 + top notch tyres, it's hard to think of a better machine for this weather.

New mid-range tyres on the CC3 have much-improved its grip on snow.
The extra few mm of tread make a big difference.
|
I found the Khumos were very quiet.
Did you notice any significant change in noise level?
|
Not significantly, but the Michelins were also quiet.
|
I have new Michelin Energy tyres on the Yaris and grip in snow is quite good considering the sideways grooves are all on the edges- not in the centre.
I suspect most problems in snow - apart from drivers - are due to less than 4mm of tread...
|
Exactly. Not saying the Kuhmos are great tyres, just that new tyres are a great benefit in this weather.
Just been for a bit of a run on them and they are just as good noise and comfort wise as the Michelins.
|
Your olduns had 3mm of tread, your new ones have 8.
That extra 5mm in snow and slush is probably very noticeable. Less so on ice I would assume.
|
Strangely there is not a great deal of ice here. It is still quite compacted but still powdery snow. Can't wait for the freezing rain! :-(
|
I have a set of Kuhmos on the Octavia, been down to Spain and South of France on them plus around and about in all this snow and ice. As good as any other tyre I've had on it (Michelins, Avons and Firestones I recall). Yes, they are comfortable and quiet. They're not really a budget tyre, pretty mainstream and I believe Nissan fit them as originals. I've just had some on the back of the Panda, £79 for two tyres fitted!
