Motorcycles with Daytime MOT... Insurance problem - Harleyman
I don't know if this will affect any of our posters, but I thought it worth bringing to your attention.

As a preface, for the benefit of those who don't know, it is possible to remove all lights from a motorcycle yet still have it road-legal; these are mainly enduro, trials and moto-cross machines BTW.

There has recently been a problem with one well-known insurance broker, specifically, Carole Nash, informing customers that such machines were not covered by insurance. This only came to light when one rider renewed; it had not been made generally known and was not specifically mentioned, nor asked about, when renewing.

I was asked to investigate this on behalf of our club members, and it seems that Carole Nash had assumed that any motorcycles without lights had been deliberately modified and that therefore the "standard" questions regarding modifications covered the exemption. It was pointed out to them, by myself and the heads of other official motorcycling bodies, that most veteran motorcycles, many vintage and certain specialist modern bikes as described above, were all originally built without lights and were therefore not modified.

The upshot of this is that I have now been informed that CN have now changed their procedures, and that all bikes on their CLASSIC policies which have the "daytime MOT" are definitely covered.

I advise any motorcyclist who suspects that his bikes might fall foul of this potential problem, to contact their broker or insurer and make sure that they are covered.

I know enduros don't need front or tail lights, but don't they still have to have a brake light?

Scrambler type motor cycles will come from manufacturer without front and rear lights.
Use on the road is permitted under Road Vehicle Lighting Regs 1989.

Nothing in these Regulations shall require ANY LAMP or reflector to be fitted between sunrise and sunset to–

(a)a vehicle not fitted with any front or rear position lamp.

BUT if used on a road between sunset and sunrise different ball game when they have to have a lamp system.

So if one gets a motor cycle with a lighting system and this is removed then it is a modification and sure as little apples the Insurance Company will have an interest and if not not notified may well void Insurance Cover.
