What car(s) do you drive? - RattleandSmoke
This thread title may seem really daft but I am often asking this question in other threads which then get off topic. So until the drive section is finished it might be worth while having a thread here. I think I know what most the regulars drive but there are some people who I have no idea what they drive but assume we all know, so it will be nice to have a thread with it all on place.

I am 28 been driving 2 years and drive a ten reg Fiat Panda 1.1 Active I had since new and very rarely drive a 13 year old Fiesta 1.3 Ghia (my dads) mainly if I need to move it. I live in the middle of Manchester so the Panda is ideal but if I lived in a more rural place doing more milleage I would want something a bit faster.

My own recently acquired BMW X1 2.0xDrive in Alpine white - Occasional access to my wife's black MX5 2.0......

Bike fleet has been completely reviewed and now comprises of a BMW R1200RT - state of the art touring bike...a jointly owned Kawasaki ER6-F which will be my "pottering" bike and my wife's every-day ride. She also has a Yamaha YBR125 learner bike which I've been known to tackle an Odyssey on.

...Do you? Does the roof leak?...

swiss tony,

I have two things to say to you.

1. No, but I suppose it could start doing so at any time.

2. Instead of making fatuous remarks about my car, why not answer the OP about your own?

And before anyone tells me to calm down, I'm just fine, it's a good night to be a Tottenham fan.

Sorry to hear about the bad weekend and awful news today.

Hello.

A 1991 Saab 900S for personal use (mileage now just over 160k, mainly weekend use only) and a 2001 Suzuki Super Carry for work.

Both each cover around 6,000 miles a year.

Thanks, Chris.

On a slight tangent, my daughter and her friends were overheard singing (to the tune of the current pop song which goes "I throw my hands up in the air sometimes / Saying Ay-Oh, / Gotta Let Go"):

"I throw your children in my van sometimes / Saying Ay-Oh, / I'm a paedo"

Kids, eh.

The Merc Sprinters seem to rot for fun, but they go well while they're falling apart.

The 05 plate one's just gone round 200k, the R reg breakdown van is showing 573k (yes, miles!) and actually drives better.
What car(s) do you drive? - Harleyman
The old Sprinters were much better vans. I bought one specifically for moving down here with, V plate with nearly 300K on the clock. Kept it for nearly a year, all it cost me was a new alternator.

Mine was a 310, best compromise for power and economy;29mpg on a run, easy to drive and very comfortable. Mercedes don't have a good track record with tin-worm on vans though, the older 308 series was another van which would go forever mechanically but fell apart if it rained.

Sorry Rattle, the question is one of my pet irritations :)

You mean, what kind of car have I got?

Two Volvo 240s, a Series II LandRover, a Ferguson tractor. But not all at the same time, and my wife drives some of them sometimes.

"What car do you drive ?" was my annoying father in law's first question when I was first introduced. I answered, "I can drive anything really at a push, but at the moment I am driving a 20-year old Renault 4".
That shut him up - he moved in the world of business execs who liked to score status points against each other.

We have currently got:

A 2007 Ford Focus ST2 3dr with various extras including keyless and Bluetooth that make it a very practical though fun car. 66k. I have done 32k in this in the last year.

A faithful 1998 Renault Clio 1.6 RXE with aircon and elec roof, had it since 4k miles, now 73k.

A 2005 BMW 120i Sport 5dr with nice 17" alloys, good to drive. 39k. Just aquired and a few niggles need sorting so we also have ...

... a 2010 "60" plate Skoda Fabia diesel courtesy car sitting on the drive, it says "Greenline"* on the back though I am not sure which engine it has other than it is gruff in a PD kind of way. The wife prefers to use the Clio so it's redundant until the BMW is ready to be collected.

*Greenline were busses in the NW Surrey area as I recall.

Yeah, still got the ole Almera 05 1.8SE auto, had it nigh on 4 years now which is a long time (for moi)

Sure, it doesn't excel in many areas, but it doesn't fall behind either, so why change it.

Hers: 2001 51 Clio 1.2 Dynamique, 80K. Originally bought new by me. Sold when junior EP arrived. 3 owners later (all young women!) bought again for the wife.

In my dreams: Aston Martin DB9... (but not for work obviously!)

Company hack is a BMW 530d estate automatic in metallic black, first registered in December 2009 and now with 70,000 hard driven km on the clock. My sense of taste was on holiday when I specified dark brown leather seats and light wood trim, but other than that it has a nice spec. Still polishes up into absolutely as new condition.

My own car is a Mercedes E320 Coupe automatic (5 speed) in metallic blue, first registered in Feburary 1994, 1 previous owner and now with 74,000km on the clock. High spec for its time including leather and memory seats with orthopedic function but bafflingly no seat heaters. Not as new but looks 3 years old rather than 16.

2004MY Saab 9-5 Aero estate, automatic, with suspension & chip upgrade, running beautifully at 150,000 miles. Ideal for those long continental journeys! Except, of course, for the 33mpg, although the price of €1.165/litre for super unleaded at a Luxembourg motorway service area softens the blow.

Nothing has changed for over 5 years. We've got a big move coming next year, so I don't want to spend any money out on cars etc as I might need it for the house:

Mine:
1999 'T' light metallic blue Jag S Type 3.0 SE auto with quite a high spec, inc the important to me, sunroof, although the grey leather is a colour I wouldn't choose nowadays. Lowish mileage and very well maintained, so will keep it indefinitely (not worth selling and still has everything working on it).

1998 'S' (should have been a 'T' but the original log book type equivalent was in Arabic, so DVLA would only accept the order documentation from Japan which was in Japanese and English) CBR 1100XX Super Blackbird motor cycle. Was absolutely mint until my mother's neighbour drove over it, currently being repaired. Was on SORN in my mother's garage. Carb model, brother dyno jetted it, fitted a K&N air filter and sports exhausts several years back, which changed it from a civilised, seriously quick bike..to a beast.

1968 'G' Triumph 2000 mk1 auto. Have owned it for over 20 years. Also stored in Devon, in a family friend's garage, was going on a SORN, but two people asked to borrow it for weddings, so currently all legal. Deep maroon colour with beige leather and wood. Is exceptionally tidy, but if i'm honest the interior will have to be the next project. Leather is fairly good, but needs TLC... carpets need starting again.

Wife's:
2005 '54' Jag X Type 2.0D SE estate with a load of extras, no sunroof :-(... Ex demo, had it from 3 months old. Dark blue with light beige leather. Cracking car made even better when I had it remapped, gone from about 128BHP up to roughly 165 - 170BHP. Still in very good nick and fastidiously maintained, although mileage creeping up as we use it for long journeys.

Me - 2000X Xantia Hdi 110 Estate. 123k now and owned from new. Bought as family car but disgraced itself with a cambelt 'skip' 48hours after we acquired the 'lingo (see below) then several other issues. Ended up relegated to mostly station hack duties but has seen new lease of life in last twelve months due (a) it being daughter's L plate mount and (b) family illness seeing me spend 3 months doing twice/thrice weekly trips from Northampton to Leicester or Loughboro'.

SWMBO - 2005 Berlingo Multispace, 1.8D in desire trim. Bought new to replace a 14yo BX that had to be put down. Intention was to use it for three years at low mileages then consider a single replacement for it and Xant. PCP based on 9k miles pa was a no brainer. Xantia then failed big time and brother 'lingo had to step up as family car for holiday to France. In spite of no aircon extra space for kiddy stuff plus fact that son no longer spontaneously vomited in the back it's 'temporary promotion to holiday transport rapidly became permanent and, as it was way over PCP mileage, handing it back was not an option

As my job is precarious (cuts) and SWMBO's supply teacher work likewise both are slated to be run into the ground.

I also have a garage full of pedal bikes.

1992 Renault Espace 2.1 TD (mine). Had it for several years since meeting the current Mrs Ash and the family doubled in size. Replaced a Ullysse petrol proved too expensive to run. We tried to sell it over a year ago when I was made redundant, but ended up keeping it as I found another job (much to my relief, the process of selling it was proving traumatic).
Over 200k miles now, and it looks very rough around the edges now but the important bits have been looked after and it went through the last MoT for the cost of a set of brake pads and wipers.

1996 Renault Espace 2.1 TD (Mrs Ash's). Replaced my Pug 309 - we decided on two 7 seaters as a friend bought the Pug, and the running costs were very similar (at least that's how Mrs Ash justified it - woman maths?). It's the Alize edition which has aircon, electric everything, and extremely comfortable seats. Only 160k miles.

In the household we have:

FIAT Grande Punto "Sound" 1.4 - 60 plate - I'm still getting used to the feel and balance of the thing, as it's a bit different to FIATs of old being the result of a liaison between a Corsa and a Punto behind the garage. It seems to have its mother's (GM) suspension, which is different (for me).

Skoda Fabia 1.2 HTP estate - 09 plate - subjectively better parts better assembled than the (Italian built) FIAT, except for the front suspension which feels as if it is a collection of rubber bushes, which are wearing out prematurely.

Morris Minor 1000, 2 door saloon - 1965 "C" plate - don't ask, it's from a different time.

FIAT Panda 1.1 ECO - 09 plate - the twin of Rattles, except it has a spare wheel but no 12 volt power socket.

The youngest has moved out now, and is so far away I don't see her KA - 05 plate - any more, although she still charges around bits of Cumbria in it.

The two FIATs are poles apart in terms of gearing - the Panda is very long, better in 3rd at 30 than 4th, but the Punto is very short and will pull happily from below 30 in 5th.
