Ive been pondering whether or not to get it sorted because the knocking irritates and Im not happy with the level of play there is, so Im gonna bite the bullet and get it replaced as Im getting a slight torque steer feeling sometimes so I think its not long for this world.

Any clues how much it should cost, roughly? Ebay seem to have the parts for about £40, so assuming thats roughly the parts cost, is it a labour intensive job?
Im going to get the tracking done at the same time and get a squealing aux belt changed aswell. Im also going to get the air con belt removed because my mech suggested last time that its worth doing as the air con doesnt work anyway and I wont be fixing it - shouldnt cause any probs should it?

More expensive than shipping it on... :-)

Your mileage may vary, but our old Mazda 323 had clicky joints (when near full lock) for eight years, and they never got worse. One remedy I employ if they sound at all suspect is to inject some motorcycle chain lube, which is very sticky and effective when the solvent has evaporated, but goes in via a thin aerosol tube that can be applied through a small nick in the CV boot (I use a scalpel). You can then wiggle it about to get the maximum penetration (as it were) and you should notice an instant improvement.

I like your style JBJ ! Reminds me of the droning rear wheel bearing a pal got on his 120k mile Mondeo, it got worse until about 150k but then it gradually got quieter again until at 180k it became silent and didn't utter another murmer until he sold the car at 228k miles.

Not recommended practice of course !

I bought a driveshaft from my local scrapper for £25 a few months back - cheaper than a new CV joint and less hassle to fit. Of course, Esperos may not be as plentiful as Escorts in scrapyards ;)

Apparently the driveshaft is a generic GM part. The Daewoo fans ( I know, who would have thought THEY would exist ) have a huge knowledge of what Vauxhall bits are direct ( and cheaper ) replacement parts for Daewoos.

>>The Daewoo fans

I'm not surprised. There's a large following for the KIA Pride (AKA Ford Festiva) in the USA.

Yes well, Americans are even stranger than the English :-)
