started how? Just rolled backward as handbrake cable snapped?

It is likely she had the engine running while scraping off the ice.

The first witness would then give a statement to say the engine was running, which has become slightly mangled - or misquoted - in the police statement to the press.

Wasn't an auto, was it?

Police are now investigating how the woman came to be caught under her car, but initial enquiries suggest she was de-frosting her car when it is thought to have started and rolled backwards, dragging her under the front wheels. Police believe she was trapped for around half an hour before her neighbour found her.

Car started itself, did it?

Or did they mean: 'it started to roll backwards?'

Meaning's far from clear to me.

What I meant that there is no difference between the press release and the report in fact it's word for word - not mashed about with.

What might anyone have possibly seen that appeared to be nothing of relevance but in fact was a vital clue?

"I saw a man creeping up to the car carrying bolt-croppers, but I thought nothing of it at the time"

"I saw a car rolling backwards down the drive but I assumed the woman would jump clear"
