I have never got into these before but our 3-year-old Colt is about to go out of warranty. We have been offered Mitsubishi's mechanical breakdown cover for 1,2 or 3 years for £275, £409 or £589. The car is well looked after. Regardless of whether there are better deals eslewhere, are these warranties a good idea in egneral or are they the same kind of rip-off you get with white goods and the like?

The first thing to do is read the terms and conditions of the Mitsubishi warranty. Find out what you would get for your money.

they are designed to make a profit, and that profit comes from you.

Mitsubishi cars are also designed to make a profit, as are all other private sector goods and services and the profit comes from the buyers.
I know what is covered by the offer, I just want to know what the general feeling is about these warranties.

Ok then you know the assumption is your car wont go wrong, they wont pay out, and you pay them.
That in my book makes them a waste of time.

d, I once bought an extended warranty on an Escort and boy did I get value for money. But there was only a one year manufacturer's warranty. Your car is approaching three years old so you know by now if you have a dog that needs covering or not.
In general I'm allergic to insurance (see Stu's post on his water supply).
