I might be considering doing a bit of local taxi work, daytimes only. Not wishing to commit fortunes to a vehicle, what would the panel consider as an option?
My target would be 5 seater (estate a bonus). Likely petrol. 7k ish. Thoughts please.

I’d forgotten about that, but wouldn’t any for sale now likely have their battery worn out?

Toyota Corolla estate 1.8
I see lots of them used as taxis both locally and overseas

if you mean the drive battery Toyota will warranty that for up to 15 years subject to some conditions.
Those conditions are a 10,000 mile warranty granted with a main dealer service, up to a maximum mileage of 150,000.
OP might find a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid for cheaper and in better nick than a Prius.
Battery degradation is a bit of a myth. Just not happening in any kind of significant numbers.
for that money either an Auris estate or perhaps an Octavia estate.
Auris estate, taxi drivers run them to 250-300k miles.
Most cars in my area area
Most are Toyotas
Auris/Corolla Estate
Prius
the odd
CHR, Yaris Cross
A few brand new Kia Hybrids
The odd Skoda Octavia saloon and estates
Round my way Skodas seem to have been replaced by Teslas, the Corolla estate is still common and CHRs are also part of the mix. A few Kias as well. The airport run crowd seem to be moving from the default Mercedes E class to the Mercedes EQE, although my last journey from LHR was in Tesla Model Y…and the less said about the ride quality in that the better!!

Yaris Cross too small for taxi work? will take 5 but tight on rear seat space.

Skoda Fabia (2016 estate) was similar.
