The XC40 went in for its 5th service yesterday. Mildly pricey at the main dealer, but it includes Volvo Assistance renewat and the subscription renewal for the online services, which makes it somewhat more competitive (and keeps the car software updated). MOT also requested, so an "all day" booking.
Mot done (clean), physical servicing done, but the Volvo network was down, so software updates, app subscription and various central system updates not done. An inconvenient re-visit today required (after a call to ensure it wouldn't be wasted).
On leaving yesterday, however, it became apparent that aircon was entirely non-functioning, so a warm and sweaty drive home.
I informed them of the issue with the checking 'phone call this morning, and they said they'd take a quick look whilst it was "hooked up".
Aircon still not functioning on the way in (and the underbonnet pipes exhibited no chilling at all).
They did the remaining work very quickly (I barely had time to do "tyre-kicking" round the showrooms for the adjacent marques), and when I returned I was told the aircon had been tested and was found to be fully functional (full of gas, no leaks, etc.). No fault - "Might have changed something during the software updates".
Unconvinced, I returned to the car and (as ambient was at the lowest settable temperature), put the temp on "Lo" - Lo and behold (see what I did there) immediate cold air!
Journey back was on my usual 20 degree setting, no cooling required, but I could tell it was dehumidifying. After leaving it off for some time, quick fumble under the bonnet and the aircon pipes were icy cold within seconds of starting the engine.
So, did putting the car on the Volvo software fix things, or had the mechanic technician redone something he'd undone yesterday?

Is it the same as the EV version in that pretty well everything is buried in the screen? I'm wondering how obvious it would be if the a/c had been turned off.
Has it maybe got some kind of eco mode that turns the a/c off?

Yes, the climate control is via the touch screen.
I leave it in "auto" (with aircon on) all the time, and it occured to me it might have been manually turned off (though it would have to have been very deliberate because the switch is in sub menus), but when it is off there is a prominent "Aircon Off" displayed against the main control area (though the remainder of the display remains unchanged).
It would have been the most obvious cause, but that display certainly wasn't there when I was having the issues.

One thing that I have often noticed after a service (on any car) is that the A/C has been 'fiddled with'. Maybe it's standard procedure of some sort?

On many oe maintenance schedules a check of aircon performance is specified. It might well require running the ventilation with the aircon switched off, then switching it on and measuring the temperature drop at outlet(s).
Certainly I could believe this might have been done, but all the other climate settiings were as per my normal ones, and the "AC off" warning next to the button to invoke climate settings wasn't there. Testing would normally mean turning it off, and then on to measure temp drop, so it being left off is rather counter-intuitive.
(Given it's the obvious answer, I have to admit, I might just have missed the "AC Off", but it would have been very difficult, and nigh on impossible once I started playing to try to get it to work).

I'd be gobsmacked if they check the temp (but then I've never had a Volvo).
On our various VW Group cars, the climate control is often turned off (there's an off button, and it also goes off is the fan speed knob is turned to its lowest setting) when picking the car up.. First I notice is the car starts misting up.

Though this includes the annual On-call and Car App subscription (not compulsory, but I want it), and a year's Volvo Assistance (Pan-European breakdown etc) which they value at £145 if bought separately (not the value I'd put on it, but it is worth a significant sum).
