For those who take their vehicles overseas, do you take out ‘stand alone’ insurance, or add on to your car insurance policy ?
My last Green Flag policy inc full EU cover, and extended period in EU, was £85. A pittance in the grand scheme of things but GF did confirm comprehensive EU recovery in a worst case scenario.

We just have it as an add on to the car policies. To be honest, I can’t remember how much that costs, but I don’t think it was frightening.
We go to France quite a lot now so it’s sort of one more thing not to worry about.

Skoda provided breakdown cover with the car until JAn 27.
Before that our LV (was Britannia Rescue) UK cover included overseas.

I had lengthy chat with an LV representative last week who confirmed that my European cover will get me to an approved local garage in the event of a breakdown (but I would have to pay for repairs). In the event of my vehicle not being driveable, they would transport me and my car back to the UK (home address or garage for repairs).

As would be the case in the event of a breakdown in the UK.

I need to be rather careful with the small print as I’m away twice a year for between 7 & 8 weeks…not all add ons cover for extended periods in the EU.

And some, I believe, will only cover recovery cost up to the car’s value.

I bought an old (2008) SLK last year, and used it earlier this summer for a ‘Monte Carlo or bust’ old bangers jaunt through France. Because my MB dealer is pretty reasonable for servicing I’d had it done there before the trip, and that gave me 12 month Mercedes European breakdown cover. Now, as it turned out I didn’t need it, but I can still remember the very pleasant weekend I spent in Beaune at Mercedes expense when my E class convertible suffered a puncture that couldn’t be fixed over a holiday weekend:)
The caveat being I am sure they would recover to a a Mercedes main dealer in the first instance. Though dealer costs in France seemed a fair bit cheaper than here when I looked, ideally pondering whether I could justify a short trip for food and wine, to be covered by the savings on a service ;)
I’ll be back in France in a few weeks as going down to the alps - still undecided whether I take the Merc and enjoy the top-down mountain driving but tolerate 750 miles of autoroute, or stick to the BMW and do it in comfort :)

Very good!
We’re off to Provence soon for a few weeks. Probably in the old faithful estate, mainly for bike shifting practicalities, but we might take the Feep for a change and/or to give it a run.
This being retired thing is harder than people think you know.
All these decisions…

Through our Nationwide Flexplus current account we still have Joint European wide car breakdown cover with no car age limit , inc personal cover for both of us. It also includes travel insurance - sometimes extra for pre existing conditions, but no age limit. It also gives us mobile phone insurance - which we have used in the past. Total joint cost is £18 / month.
Nationwide also for the last few years has been giving us £100 / year back each with the fairer share payment.
